Hi, I'm trying to find a load to use in my 686 and my 28.Both are 6 in.I have been loading light 10.5 grs .Just cant find a good load for tight groups.I dont want to work the 28 hard she is to nice!

Pick a faster powder then. Switch to something in the Unique range on the burn rate chart and go from there.

Loading down a powder has much less satisfaction than loading one towards the top of it's particular data.

Powders seem to work much cleaner, better when they work at the top of their range than at the bottom.

Personally, you can load the hottest load you can load in a 357Mag case and run it through either one of those firearms and not hurt them one bit.

I shoot cast bullets out of my M586 almost exclusively and prefer SR4756 for those loads. Gives me 1300fps from the 6" tube and 1600fps from a Marlin 20" 1894.

Just me but I think 2400 is the wrong powder for what you want. Can you down load it more than some other "magnum" powders? Sure. Why though? There are other powders that work better at those "mild" type loads.

Also, any given powder, loaded within the range it is intended for is capable of excellent accuracy with any given bullet.

Provided your handgun shoots the load accurately.

And any given powder with any given bullet can be grossly inaccurate.

If you want the most accurate load you will have to test a lot of powders, or get lucky on the first, or several first, you choose.

What I am saying is that someone will tell you that HP38 gives them excellent accuracy with "XYZ" bullets. But in your handgun you might get lousy accuracy.

Also, buying several different brands of powder to experiment with is not a waste of money. Even the most inaccurate powder loads cans be used for plinking and casual shooting until the powder is used up.

W231 should do the trick.

I agree, W231 will be just right for what you're trying to do. At the outside chance you don't like the results you get with W231 give AA#5 or HS-6 a try...

What they said. I've loaded 2400 down to 12.6gr & really wouldn't go any lower than that. W231 sounds like just what you're after.

XTP are kinda pricey for plinkers aren't they? I load my light loads with Bullseye & LSWC. XTP I use for the Big Dogs.

Nosler 158gr SJHP are a bit less expensive & I've gotten some pretty good accuracy with them.

I agree, the 250 piece bulk pack from Nosler is fairly inexpensive and they are good bullets too.

I am amused by "not wanting to work the 28 too hard". You aren't. The 28 will take hotter load than most pistols and ask for more. I have a 28 and would not be shy about loading as much as 15 grains of 2400 with a 158 grain bullet in it.However you might want to try 7 grains of Unique for a load and see how that does.

I will try a hotter load with 2400 .The hornady book I have is the a new edition loads are lighter. It stops at 14.3 grs for 357 with xtp.I bought the book for the 6.8 loads for ar.I will load top load 14.3 and go from there and get another reload manual.Time to update any way to compare various loads.

I load 158 grain XTP for my 627PC, 5" barrel ... 13.3 grains of 2400 gives me about 1180 fps ... 12.5 grains of 2400 give me about 1060 fps ... 13.8 grains of 2400 gives me about 1350 fps in my Desert Eagle and about 100 fps less in the 627PC.
