Default NOW I WANT IT TO KNOW!!! WHAT DO YOU LOAD FOR 357 MAG. JACKETED OR LEAD BULLETS?

Because of some private discussions, it is no longer berable.

So I wanna know: What do you load for your .357 loads? Lead, jacketed bullets, synthetic coated lead, copper-plated lead ???
And if you like to tell: Why you load what you load.

Many thanks.

Swissman

158 grain Semi-jacketed Hollow Point XTP or Sierra SJHC over 15 grains of Alliant 2400. Why? Because my Highway Patrolman eats it like candy.

My range will not let me shoot cast bullets. Hopefully in a few years I'll be out in the country casting and shooting on my own personal Ponderosa so it won't be an issue.

Default Bullet preferred for .357 handloads:

I prefer a home-cast lead bullet for my .357 handloads.
Factory made jacketed bullets were fine before I learned to cast,
but jacketed bullets are expensive to use for target shooting in any kind of quantity.
My favorite .357 cast bullet design is the (justly) famous
Ray Thompson gas check semi-wadcutter design produced by Lyman as the No. 358156.
It weighs about 160 grains when cast from wheel weights and with a gas check seated.
It is capable of fine accuracy.
I have had little need for jacketed .357 bullets ever since.

158gr H&N SWC HS over 8gr of Rex II. I think those are copper plated. Excellent for up to 100m.

Hard-cast lead semi-wadcutters. Plinkin' targets die just as much with a 2 cent lead bullet as with a 20 cent jacketed hollow point.

And I don't get no leading , so don't go there!

I cast my 38 357 44 45 all in LEE dies 357 45 44 SWC 44 some are round nose. Then run then throw a sizer. This makes them more accurate. I use the LEE lube on all that I cast.

My own cast lead. I can't stamp copper jackets, so I see no reason to buy bullets when I can cast my own!!!

both cast lead and jacketed.
I tend to like the heavier bullets in lead and the little light weight hot rods jacketed.
most of the 357 is cast lead however.

99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of what I shoot in ANY pistol caliber is cast lead BOOLITS and they are cast by ME!

Why? BECAUSE I AM SUPER CHEAP! I get most of my lead free and after about 1000 bullets, I have paid for my moulds.

I have several loads.
One is with a 150gr H&G #50. 3.0gr of Bullseye in either 38spl or 357Mag cases.
358311 160gr LRN with 3.5gr of Bullseye in either case. I have not played with this bullet at 357Mag velocities, um, yet.
H&G #290BB, 160gr LSWC designed by Phil Sharpe. Same load as the 358311 in 38spl and a Speer #8 load for 357Mag that gives me 1280fps from my 6" M586 and 1580fps from my wife's Marlin 1894.

I do have one 357Mag load for the wife's rifle that uses a Hornady 158gr XTP. The load is over published data, but was tested by Brian Pearce from a similar rifle. The powder is Lil' Gun, which is NOT lead friendly, and it drives that bullet to 2016fps out of that 20" barrel.

Now, we haven't taken any game with that load YET, but this year we will, hopefully!

I load for 38spl, 357Mag, 44Mag, 45 ACP & Colt, and in the magnum and Colt, I have rifle loads that develop right at 1800fps from lever action rifles.

Not sure what you are looking for Swissman. Validation? Lead bullets can be driven near to jacketed velocities IF they fit the bore/throats of your firearm.

Just sayin'

Lead does everything I need in 357 for a lot less expense.

About 32 years ago a shooting buddy introduced me to lead "to see if I liked them".

I had been shooting maximum velocity 357 and 44 magnums, and had discovered the triple miseries: high velocity=lots of recoil, lots of barrel fouling, lots of missed targets.

Lead: moderate velocity, no fouling, lots of hit targets. Incredibly less time cleaning barrel. More fun. Less cost buying cast lead boolits.

So the next 30+ years I never loaded a jacketed slug for ANY pistol caliber.

I prefer cast lead in nearly everything I shoot.

I shoot 158g Hornaday or Remington jacketed hollowpoints and 158g Sierra semi-jacketed flat points. The cost is close to what I would pay for lead bullets, and the gun stays much cleaner with no lead fouling to bother with.

Mostly lead and some hard cast from Cast Performance. I also load jacketed bullets from Nosler and semi-jacketed hollow points from Sierra.

Lead only these days. Higher velocity, lower pressures, and lower cost.

Haven't bought a jacketed slug in decades, still have most of what I bought back then.

38, 357, and 45ACP all do great with cast lead.

I shoot lead bullets in all my hand guns mostly because its cheap and almost always available and I can cast my own when I'm inclined. I'm trying to shoot as much lead as I can before the environmentalist get it banned!

158 grn. cast lead with gas check, Speer 160 grn. semi-jacketed soft point. Use Unique or 2400. I had a few thousand of the Speer bullets which I got from the gun shop I worked for as partial payment on money they owed me.

Lead. I cast and shoot from 185 gr to 150 in the 357. Easy to shoot, stock, store and load. No problems with leading and I am over 25 miles to a store that might stock a jacketed bullet.

Jacketed, for several reasons:

-Currently I use only the 125gr. screamers, and know that they won't lead the bore at 1500+ fps.

-I am about as cheap as the next guy, but I am "cheap" also with my time. This rules out casting and experimentation for me.

-I currently shoot less than a thousand rounds a year, making the extra expense of jacketed bullets affordable. I get a good deal from Zero on good bullets(last order they were 7.9 cents each).

-I dislike cleaning guns, and all the testimony I've heard here tells me that lead bullets, with their lube and all, leave more of a mess. Obviously many fellows are OK with that; I can do without it. If the other factors listed above change, I'll deal with this one.

Everyone does what suits his own situation. If I had more time for loading, experimentation, shot many thousands of rounds a year, and what not, I might join the other posters. Not until then.

Andy

OK, OK, OK,... this is enough for me. I see where this road will "LEAD"

I understand, that lead seems to be the favorite for most of you realoaders.

This doesn't let me look good in the private discussion, which I had since a long time.

Your answers showed me your points of view on this theme.

Thanks for this statements.

For the hot stuff -- mostly shot from a Marlin -- I use jacketed bullets. Inexpensive JSP's for development then usually a Hornandy XTP for a working load. For more sedate loads I use copper plated bullets. These days the plated bullets are mostly Xtreme since they have an cannelure and I can get a good crimp on them.

I rarely use cast lead bullets since I shoot a lot at indoor ranges where they are discouraged.

+1 I shoot xtp dont want to clean lead out of the bore. The cost of jacketed bullets wont brake the bank!

Bottom line is that both work well, but for some of us there is an undeniable happy-factor in knowing that, if you can find the metal, you are not beholding to a far-away manufacturer for your bullets.

Cast lead bullets from wheel weights are my favorite. I just whipped up a bunch of 358156 SWC's last week and yesterday some 357446 160 grain SWC's. I also have some 125 grain Hornady XTP's I loaded. I prefer lead overall. My 27-2's favorite load is those 358156 SWC's and 13.0 grains of 2400.

Am using jacketed in the 357 exclusively, as i have other calibers i use for alot more frequently for pleasure/practice. The loads are mid range 125 grainers (smaller revolvers) or full bore loads that are for the larger pistols/lever carbine.

Easier to clean barrels from jacketed, and don't have to worry about readjusting sights when switching from lower velocity lead to higher velocity jacketed.

Because they work and the fact that I can make them better and customize the load, I use cast.

Monolithic solids penetrate best. A large metplat does the work.

I can do more on game and SD with a heavy cast bullet with a big metplat than I can with a JHP.

That and the fact that they're cheap. Like me.

Oh yeah... I don't have to order them, I warm up the furnace and pop out a few hundred.

Just remembered... they're also easier on the barrel.

I go with recyled wheel-weights , in loads over 900 f.p.s. I use Lyman mould #358156, with gas check. This is a 155 gr. semi-wadcutter. Good for magnum velocites.

Why- can,t afford to buy expensive factory jacketed bullets. But I can cast them for next to nothing. Gas check solves any leading issues and I like being in control of my bullet supply.

Whether or not that combination is a match made in heaven is open to discussion. That Elmer found it to be a pretty good one in Idaho is good enough for me. It does everything I need a .357 to do. That big grease groove and making sure the bullets fit right keep it from leading. If the chamber throats are undersize, pure Linotype will lead!

When I was shooting steel silhouette(3/8 thick) steel rams at 600 feet & had to knock the ram over I used 15 grs of 2400 pushing a Keith cast swc design bullet # 358429 wgt was 170 grs. Because of the weight of the hard cast bullet it was a tad hotter load than BLUJAXOI'S.
Mine was a RED line load but like BLUJAXOI my model 28(6in) did the job for me. I made the mistake of shooting that bullet in my model 19.
I had to use my shoe heel to pound out the empties before I ended up taking my gun to S&W ( Right down the road ) and have a new cylinder installed. Live and learn.

Check these guys out... Good prices and they have different bullets for different uses.

Missouri Bullet Company

I have used their "soft" 158 gr LSWC for .38 special and Trail Boss for light loads with no leading. I have used their .357 "action" bullets in 158 gr LSWC .358 at magnum loads with also no leading.

I hope to one day cast my own, until then, Missouri Bullet Co gets my money.

Plus 1 for Missouri Bullet's "action" 158 grain LSWC. Price is right and they're accurate as well. My son uses their 125 grain truncated cone bullets for cowboy action shooting, too.

Yep, just like that. Standard primers and 2400 or AA-9. Haven't shot a jacketed .357 in years. Also cast the 358156 Thompson design but I'd rather not have to mess with gaschecks.

Is powder a factor in barrel leading? I use bullseye and 158 gr LRN I buy and I get MUCHO leading. Is bullseye too hot a powder? I'm only using 3.4 / 3.5 grains

That's possible - faster burning powder may "melt" the bullet base to some degree or at least soften it so that leading is more likely - but I'd more suspect the bullets are soft and/or undersize for your chamber/bore. Buy a couple of hundred good quality hard-cast SWC and load with your same powder. Bet they don't lead. (clean the lead out first so you can see the difference).

Are you loading this load in a 357Mag case?

It is a 38spl load, that is why I am asking. I have used it before in the larger cases, that is not a problem at all. When you do so, the pressure goes down and with a small hard lead bullet, that can be a bad thing. There is FAR more leading done when the bullets don't fit and are too hard than ones that are too soft. If the bullet was too soft, with the load you are using, they would lead less than a hard one, trust me.

If you are using 357Mag cases, find out what maximum is and work your way up to that. Personally, I would like a slower powder for maximum loads but, hey, you can use the partner you brought to the dance to get there! Bullseye just will not get you to true magnum velocities.

It is a very lead friendly powder. When you say MUCHO leading, where is it at in the gun? At the forcing cone or at the muzzle?

Rog bullet diameter was listed as .358 and mic'd out to that also. I forget the brand name but they were bulk from N E trading. Any suggestions on where to go??

Lead. Very rarely jacketed. Mostly 158's and 180's in the little maggy.
