Default Wadcutters

I am intrigued with the target impact effect of full WCs and have started experimenting with loading 45 160gr RNFP lead upside down to get low pressure WC loads. Initial test with 4gr Titegroupe are good, accurate at close range. I plan to test others also, maybe 124 RN upside down. Anyone else try this?

Or you could use real wadcutters and loading data from reliable manuals.....

A danger with experimenting with reduced loads with who-knows-what bullets is sticking one in the bore. Just a caution.

If you test with gallon jugs of water in a row I think you will need to rethink this project. Load the RNFP backwards with reduced loads and the same bullet frontwards with full power then identical loads. Post results.

What do you want to use them for? Self defence?

Decades ago I did the same thing with .38 Special HBWC's and used them one night on a fellow that was treaspassing and looking in my daughters bedroom window. She saw him from another room and got me out of bed to confront him. Short story, I shot him with one and he escaped only to turn up in a hospital a couple hours later.
The police wanted to know what I shot him with because they couldn't find a bullet, only schrapnel.

10mm, when you care enough to send the very best.

Back in the old days when we were struggling for good loads for our off duty snubs,we did the same thing.
I can't advise you on your experiment, but wadcutters, believe it or not,are pretty good defense loads from a snub revolver. They are very efficient cutters through tissue and give good penetration.
I often recommend them for shooters who may be recoil sensitive, especially in airweight guns.
Buffalo Bore loads up some pretty hot ones, but the Winchester X38SMRP wolrks pretty well.
I never thought I'd see wadcutters cost as much as they do today, but they are a viable option, and lots of fun to shoot.

Search here for "combat wadcutters" or "defensive wadcutters" - it comes up a lot.

Default .45

Hi Tommy,
I played with them looking for an accurate load for the 25-2.
I loaded 155 grain .452 bullets backwards. I was thinking the little nub on the 155's might have some magic boat tail effect.
I loaded up to 4.5 of 231. The first five went into a tiny group. I found when shooting ten shot groups that seven or so would hover around the 1" mark at twenty five yards but anywhere from two to four out of the ten would often open groups to around 4".
I don't see anything a person can do that he couldn't do better with a conventional round. It is fun looking sometimes though.
Good luck.
Mike

I honestly believe that firearms and the means to load and fire them effectively have been around long enough now that if there was any merit to loading bullets backwards, someone would've figured it out, and there would be common factory loadings, or at the least, published load data for the technique. I think the full wadcutter is probably the pinnacle of achievement when it comes to "the target impact effect of full WCs" and I doubt any change in shape, front or rear will improve upon the performance of that design in your stated example. As has already been said, just get or cast yourself some WC's, load them to spec. and be content that you have a bullet that does wadcutters as well as they can be done.

I totally agree with this. We loaded them backwards for years and never found any evidence that they were any more effective,or expanded to any appreciable degree with the hollow base forward.
For a target load thay work pretty well for defense just as they are due to the efficient shape.
I believe we reach a point of dimishing returns eventually with everything, just as with using full house magnums in short barreled revolvers. There's really only so much we can do with a handgun bullet, although modern technology and design has made them better.

I use factory defensive ammo for personal protection. These are "Just for Fun" informal low pressure plinking rounds shot mostly in older revovers that are not match grade shooters aka 1917 & HEs. Let me know if you are aware of source for 45 WCs.

Check here: http://www.wideners.com/itemview.cfm?dir=278|281|1083|1136

They have several weights of semi wadcutters. I just bought the 255gr here for $105 per 1000 prepaid. They put them in a priority mail box and your mailman will love you when he has to take them to your door. 36lbs. They have several other deals in other calibers that are prepaid.

I have a couple of pounds of Blue Dot that I received with a package deal and I am going to see how 12 gr will do with the 255gr.

I will shoot these in a 25-5 8 3/8"

They also have 185gr and 200gr semi wadcutters. You have to pay for shipping on these.

This is only my 2 cents worth, why waste your valuable time in experimenting, with all the great bullets the companies have come out within the last few years since concealed carried has become so popular. There are some really good rounds out there. I myself, think that Hornady has the best selection...............CookE
