Default Lee safety prime adjustment on Lee classic turret press?

I just received my new press today and trying to get it set up. Having a little trouble getting the fine adjustment on the safety prime. It does load a primer about every other time, but misses and drops a primer on floor the other half. I have watched some you tube vids about adjustment, but still not completely understanding. Which way does the primer arm need to move, any idea? A vid mentioned being just to left, but what part is left of what? I have the little black washer on bottom and then primer and the silver odd shaped washer on top. Thats how instructions showed, but not stated. Is that correct? Seem to have everything else set up ok. I know the primer is touchy. Any help? thanks trikerider

The best I can explain is the "trigger" of the primer needs to sort of swing in from just left of the primer arm in the ram. Only talking a fraction of an inch between go and no go.

Tighten the nut holding the whole thing just enough that it will move with the wrench and move it just a bit until the trigger lines up.

Try it without primers to be sure it clicks on the primer arm.

It's easier done than explained.

Round bushing(spacer) black plastic primer unit, silver egg shaped washer (fits in the groove of plastic), bolt through to hold it together. Sounds like you have it installed correctly.

I gave up on mine. The rest of the press I like a lot, but I'm not talented enought to use the priming feature.

I shimmed mine a bit, it was ending up a little to the left of where it should be, put a small piece of plastic shim under the mount, to the right of the bolt, tilts the top of the primer to the left, the 'business' end to the right, swiveled it till it hit where I wanted. You need to push toward the ram and down at the same time, you'll get the hang of it.

Don't know whether you saw this video or not regarding the Lee Safety Prime-does a pretty good job of explaing the installation, etc:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iVdU...eature=related
One other tip: the primer cup can be raised up or down by screwing it in or out. So if the Safety Prime is too close to the cup and is binding just screw the cup in to lower it.

Hi: I agree with Jamie, slightly to the left and then swing it in. Straight on won't work. There is definite "feel" to it. Go slow and practice. It's like shooting a basket or throwing a curve, you need to get " in the groove". It took me a while to find out what worked for me. Once you find it it woks fine. I still cup my hand under each primer function, just in case I'm off. No big deal. It's just part of the press. Remember you're doing it as a hobby, not a business. Plus you get to shoot your work every weekend. Zackary!

DUH!!!!! I thought I read the instructions, but guess not. I was using the large safety prime with small primers and small pocket. I will try it correctly today. It seems to glide right into the pocket and trip now. I watched the vid that carnage_7 recommended. thanks guys trikerider

Yes, sir, that can cause problems.

Glad you discovered the problem. Another tip that may help you avoid problems once you get going with it: as you dispense the primer, push the trigger mechanism with your finger on the back side(side facing away from the press, toward you) rather than on the top. Also be aware that the last primer or two in the channel may not feed, due to the lack of pressure on it/them from other primers higher in the channel. I have to dispense the last two manually every time I use the thing.

Hope this helps a bit.

I could never remember which was which so I put a little piece of tape on the back of each primer tray with a L and a S. I don't like to think to hard.

Lee makes (some) rinky dinky looking stuff for sure, and you'd swear it will never work. But once you use it and learn the method, it works a treat.
I lined mine up by looking straight down from the top and watching the motion. My first couple popped out until I learned to push forward then down to click one in.

It beats the heck out of placing by finger or using an auto-prime hand-held.

I used it yesterday for the first time to actually load 50 rds of 357 and all worked great. I had maybe 2-3 primers that did not go into the cup, but none fell on floor, it just didn't feed one. Might have been my fault, not push far enough in to drop one in cap. One was to low (last couple primers) and did not feed as people have mentioned, but overall, it did great and made some nice rounds. I am quite pleased with it. trikerider

I leave mine about half full of primers (store them in a plastic coffee can) so I just hang one on the press to start loading. When it gets down to about one row I put another box in. I tend to load in multiples of 100.

Wow!!! Maybe I need to go back and try again. I gave up a long time ago using the safety prime...just couldn't get it to work reliably. It's got to be a big time saver.

If you can get the thing to work right, the Lee Safety Prime is about the only prime on the press that I enjoy using. I don't even care for the prime on the press in my LNL AP but use it because I feel it would defeat the purpose of it to not use it. If they do a good job with their soon to be released roller handle for the Classic Turret then I may go back to using it even more...

Learn something new every day. I've had an occasional intermittent "primer spitting" issue that I solved by cleaning & turning the cup. Now I know why.

And yes.... I had to tweak the left/right on the priming unit to get it 100%.

Overall I am quite satisfied with the Lee Safety Prime. It helped to watch the youtube videos regarding the assembly and adjustment.

The only issue I am having with this product is that the primers frequently hang up and do not flow down the urethra-like tube from the reservoir to the dispenser.

If anyone else has a solution, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

Glad to know I'm not the only one that can't get the last 2 primers to feed. Just set my Classic Turret up with the safety prime and couldn't get the last 2 primers to feed.
Otherwise, I'm pretty happy with my new set up.

Once mine is about to empty the round reservoir, I add another 100. I think having the weight behind them helps keep 'em moving.

Join the club! My last two primers never feed.
That let's me know I am about done!
I shimmed my primer arm with a washer, feeds great now.
Love the Lee turret press.
But the best part is the price I paid for the whole setup!

I know this is an Old Post but I was looking for this exact information I have come to the conclusion that this Lee primer feed is a pain in the butt no matter how I adjust mine it will not put the primer in the pocket unless I use two fingers one pushing down on the top front edge and one pushing on the back if I use one finger the primer falls out and misses the pocket 100% of the time out of 25 tries 4 loaded in the pocket 21 went on the floor that is a joke. I have adjusted the small pocket for the primer to sit in up and down both directions make no difference it's like the primer feed hits the rim not letting it go in far enough to place the primer in the pocket because it touches 100% of the time I have to push fairly hard or harder than you should have to push and way harder than I see every video on YouTube on how to use it to get the primer to fall in that pocket

I do everything except operate the handle with my left hand. I pretty much never let go of the handle with my right hand.

Two tips I can suggest that work well for me.

1) I put a 5 gallon bucket under my press to catch any primers that don't dispense properly first try. I set mine on top of an overturned milk crate - that is what I found would put the top of the bucket about a foot below the ram when it is in it's lowered position.
2) I dispense the primers in a two step motion. Swing it into position with my left thumb against the bottom of the angled face of the dispenser head and then once it is in place I kind of "roll" my thumb up the angled face of the dispenser head to push it forward and down to dispense the primer.

That's what works for me, but as with all things reloading, YMMV...

On my LCT, I've found if I move the handle to drop the ram every so slightly, then prime with the safety primer it helps immensely.
This is an older video, but I found Cowboy T's videos on Lee equipment helped me a lot.

Sounds like your primer feed arm is swinging in to low and contacting the primer rocker. Try adding a thin washer under the mounting bolt for the primer system. That will raise the whole primer system a 32 in or so. You want that arm to swing in with no contact and kind of hover over the cap in the rocker untill you release the primer. It takes a bit to adjust but once you get it right, it is a VERY reliable and easy to use system.

I run two LCT presses to make thousands of rounds a year. I can't remember the last time either dropped a primer

I watched several youtube videos before I attempted to mount my safety prime on my LCT. Once I got it set, it's been trouble free for me. No, the last few primers won't empty into the cup, I just install by hand and then done. It is a time saver, once it's installed correctly.

I was really frustrated getting the Safety Prime to work as intended....then it's began working each and every prime.

It was probably that last cuss word I said that scared it into submission.

I had live primers all over the garage floor before fore the dang thing began working as intended.

I took mine apart and deburred and trimmed all the flashing and burrs away, then it worked properly. I loaded a small lot of shells with it, took it off and gave it away. Haven't had any problems since. :-)

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Default Rinky Dink Cheap Plastic Toy

After trying repeatedly to get the auto safety primer to work and dumping at least 30 primers on the floor while successfully charging only once, I've about given up. Even if some are lucky enough to get a working one, the quality and engineering of this device is equal to a toy you'd get out of a nickel gumball machine. Just snapping the whole thing together, things don't align right or stay together. I had to use a rubber band to keep the plastic feed ramp from splitting open and dumping all the primers on the floor. But the rubber band was too tight, constricting so they couldn't get through and had to loosen it. How rinky dink this setup is... It's making me hate my Lee loader.

Me too. I've been loading for years and finally tried the Safety Prime last year and couldn't get it to work worth a shizzle. Sent it back ASAP.

I must have lucked out. Mine works perfectly 100% of the time. Watched several YouTube videos and did some reading. I think what made the most difference for me was adding several hardware store washers to raise the whole thing higher off the press, and, less so, was getting it rotated left/right just right.

I'd say try more washers.

So what I found with mine is that it might not be the primer at all. If the die set is set to deep/shallow , it can effect the angle that the primer feed and primer arm in the ram intersect. I just set up another for a buddy and he was getting ready to shim the safety prime a the mount until we got the die corrected ( just a 1/2 turn as I recall.) I run two of these myself I can tell you that once it is set up right, it will run like a clock for 10's of thousands of rounds. It is worth the effort IMHO.

Before giving up OR buying a replacement unit, try giving Lee Customer Service a call. I've never needed to, but from what I've read around here, everybody who has called them has received excellent service and support.

I set up my Lee Cast Turret in May. I've loaded many hundreds of rounds since, using the Safety Prime.
After reading the instructions several times, I got it figured out.

I agree it looks and feels cheesy, but the dang thing works.
Hooda thunkit ?
