19 grains H-110, 240 Berry's plated.
Ruger Bisley
36 rounds to drop a box elder.
Chain saw would have been more expedient.

.44 will getter done! My brother and I used to max out .44 mags to a level that a couple of hits would cut down 4inch pines,had a ball with them Rugers.

That brings back memories of days gone by for me. But in our case it was an oak about that diameter and 357 Mag instead of 44 Special. Took a lot more than 36 rounds too.

Ol' Elmer must be smilin' down on another creative use of his heavy 44 special idea.
Did you recover any of the bullets?
It would be interesting to see how they fared after that extreme treatment.

But did you "calculate" your time in doing this?
(see Dollars and Sense thread)
You must put a value of how much your time and labor cost. 
Just think if you had not used those soft Berry bullets and used Hard Cast lead you could have cut that tree with 18 bullets!! 
I want to come to your place to shoot!!!

I have used a 30-30/7,62x39 & a .22 for limb trimming in the past.................

I awoke this morning thinking I should shoot the rarely fired
Bisley for the holiday.
I've already dropped one plum tree this year and have been eyeing another(worms ruin every plum).
I'll have to limit my efforts to 50 rounds of 45 long colt though.
Big booms for the holiday....WOOO-HOOOOO!
Can't wait to get home now.
Ruger Bisley Vaquero 45 colt.
(Betcha a dollar I'll have to finish with the chain  saw tho)

In my early 20's, I owned every caliber of Blackhawk and Super Blackhawk except 41 mag. We had a tree about 25 yards from the back deck with a headless nail to stick paper plates on. One day while trying out a New Model Blackhawk in 357 The tree fell over at the paper plate.
44's & 45's are the best for trimming trees, 30 Carbine & 110 grain 357's are the best for hearing loss!
One of the trustees at the club had a Belgium Browning semi auto 22 that worked on CB caps he used that to trim high limbs for the Sporting Clays course.

Hi OP,
Now that the box elder is down, you had better spray the stump face with the blue chemical named "Tordon" to kill it. We buy it at the local COOP store and use it full strength. Otherwise, your one tree will become a clump of about 15 box elder stems that will try to take over that entire area.
Unfortunately, I am an expert when it come to battling box elder.

OK the jokes on me!!! I don't think 300 rounds of cowboy loads would drop it...grabbed 6 rounds of 12 gauge 3 in magnum slugs thinking that'd do it.... I'll break out the chainsaw when my shoulder quits hurting!

Well...couple holiday brews an I'm frettin' over that plum tree! Re-read the thread.... Ahh 30-30 eh? Hadn' fired the ol' Marlin in awhile.... 6 rounds and I've got splinters on the backside and seeing a little daylight through it. Now I have an good idea about the power of your reloads...AWESOME! Yep, it's time to learn reloading....holiday company showing up...gotta put away toys an act like a good guy(RATS).... At least got beer and the grill....…

.............. and I thought I was the only nut that cut a tree down purposely with a firearm !!??
Once used a .357 Marlin rifle and 50 rounds........ to take out the top half of a white pine I thought was endangering the house. Blasted away at the thing about 30 feet up, walking around it as I shot. On the 50th round, I quit. A slight breeze brought down the top 25 feet within 5 minutes.....straight to the ground and did not hurt the house roof at all.
Redneck Chainsaw??

Yeah, I've ruined two too many trees on my property. One was a 14 inch Cedar and that succumbed to an uncounted number of .40 and 9mm. The other one was a 12 inch Cedar 100 yards off and was being used as a backstop to sight in a new Savage 30'06.
Didn't get to see either one fall. More sunlight for the underbrush now.
