Default barrel leading

had a gun rebarreled for PPC.

was having some accuracy issues at first and made some test rounds using some Remmy primers someone gave me and 2.6 WST Zero 148hbwc and was getting consistent misfires and no accuracy.

I ditched the primers and loaded with fed primers and while the reliability improved.....having accuracy issues.

notice the barrel was heavily leaded fwd of forcing cone and start of rifling.

Cleaned barrel and accuracy seemed to stabilize.

when a barrel heavily leads with swaged slug.....am I pushing the bullet too hot meaning with too hot a powder and should trying something slower burning like N320, AA#2 or W231 to minimize leading with the softer slugs?

I am only shooting target velocities out to 50 yards and this is a new HEAVY barrel and it cleaned very nice.

last year the load of 2.6 WST out of an old 1980s barrel did not have any issues and maybe the new barrel needs to just meet up with the right load.

I recall someone telling me here on the forum with leading and precision delta slugs, PD suggested using 2.9 W231.

thanks in advance

1 ST:
CHECK YOUR CRIMP. THE BULLET MUST BE HELD IN THE CASE LONG ENOUGH FOR THE PRESSURE TO FLAIR THE SKIRT OF THE BULLET TO SEAL IT TO THE RIFLING. HBWC SEEM TO PREFER A HEAVIER ROLL CRIMP. CHECK IT AGAINST A FACTORY REMINGTON ROUND LOOK AT HOW MUCH CRIMP THEY HAVE.

2ND: CHECK BULLET DIAMETER . SHOULD BE .358

3RD. MAKE A CERRO SAFE CAST OF THE FORCING CONE AND EXAMINE IT TO LOOK FOR FLAWS.

4TH ; MAKE SURE YOU DIDN'T BULGE THE BARREL

PPC, thanks for the reply.

I am using your load of 2.6/2/7 WST.

I do use a roll crimp but its not as heavy as the remmy factory roll. I will increase slightly.

I am using either zero or PD which are advertised at .357".

when I say heavy lead at the forcing cone, it came off easy with a brush and lewis lead remover for the forcing cone.

the barrel is a Bob Jones, diameter is 1.471"+....can a barrel of this diameter be bulged?

I think your charge of 2.9gr W231 is slightly light and like mentioned, the skirt isn't sealing off the gasses. I would up the charge to between 3.0gr and 3.2gr W231 and see if that reduces or eliminates the leading. I think it will.

Soft swaged bullets can be pushed to over 800 fps under the right conditions and as long as the pressures aren't too high.

Thanks for the reply AACD.

I have not loaded 231....that was a suggestion from precision delta on leading issues with someone else.

I am going to stick with 2.7 wst for a practice match this week.

I may toy with another load for next month.
