Uberti Schofield
Have Uberti Schofield chambered for 45 colt. Want to know if I could load 200gr XTP bullet with Unique, Bullseye or IMR 4227 powder. In accordance with Lyman and Spear 45 colt loads.

I would strongly suggest you stay with cast bullets in the Schofield replica. Keep your velocitys on the mid to low side and it will shoot great.

Thanks for your reply. Have you heard of anybody shooting Hornady XTP200gr 6.0 Unique powder safely out of this gun? Accourding to Lyman book 49 it claims to be safe in all 45's and replicas.

gunsdz56,
This is somewhat unrelated but do you have any problems with binding after a half a dozen to two dozen shots through your uberti schofield??
I have a 7 inch version of your exact same gun and I've been having this problem since I bought it. (shooting nothing but factory and light to medium reloads.)
As to your original question, I shoot 200 gr LSWC Speer bullets in mine all the time loaded with Trailboss and Unique. I generally keep it on the low end and NEVER EVER go into +P/Ruger Contender territory.

Sorry can't answer your question at this time. I have not yet shot my new schofield, but have bought American Eagle 45 colt 225 jacketed soft point fps 860. Also purchaced abox of schofield Ultramax the shorter version of the 45 round nose flat point. Eager to reload with XTP 200 gr, would like any information on any good hand loads or on this ammunition bought. Thanks for your reply.

That gun will take ANY STANDARD 45Colt load, any. DO NOT use any of the heavier Ruger/TC only loads though.

I would be very tempted to make up some soft LRNs and run BP cowboy loads, or 777 if you want white smoke and are worried about the salts.

Take a look at the barrel/cylinder gap. Had the same problem on a re-barreled SAA. Showed up when I was running Pyrodex in some 44 Russian cases. Trailboss has a tendency to put out a little bit more carbon than some other smokeless powders much the same as Pyrodex. Gunsmith reset the gap and problem solved. Just something to look at.

Let me state it this way.I wouldn't be comfortable with any load that would drive those bullets fast enough for sufficient expansion.
The Schofield was nowhere near as strong as the Colt SAA. The Gov't issue Schofield load was a 230gr bullet over 23gr of blackpowder at 730fps.

These Schofield revolvers are NOT the same as those of years gone by, that is the beauty of them. Lots stronger, lots. Do you think in our litigious society, do you think they are going to build something that is going to be knowingly dangerous?
I have owned one of these, actually, 2. One in 45Colt on in 38Spl. The one in 45Colt could handle any standard 45Colt load. The 38Spl one got a treatment of "THE LOAD" and did just fine with it too. Don't recommend a heavy diet of it for that caliber though, but it certainly didn't blow up...............

When I was shooting CAS (SASS #316) the last couple of years before I had to retire due to hand problem I was running two of the Uberti "Wells Fargo" model Schoifield's. My CAS load was a 200 grain bullet cast from wheel weights, White Label lube, 5 grains of Trailboss in Starline's Schofield cases.
.
I never had any problem with them binding.
.
About every 3rd-4th shoot (300-400 rounds) I would take the cylinders out and throughly clean the guns.
Between that cleaning I would just run a patch through the bore and clean under the extractor with a tooth brush after each shoot.

My 45 Colt load is 6.7 of WW231 with a lead 230 or 240 FN bullet out of 6" guns it is about 750 fps. I wouldn't hunt Moose or large Bears with it but It will knock the stuffing out of anything else that you hit. Hornady makes a lead bullet like this, it works well also. The LRN will be fine, just keep your OAL in the correct length. I have a pair of #3 Russian repos. those old Smith designs are a hoot to shoot! Ivan
