Default Lyman 360271

Ok here is one to kick around and I would like your input. I have an old lyman swc mould that throws a 150 grain swc, the 360271 which was one of the first designs from Wilder. I am thinking about loading it in a 9mm case to see what it will do, it cycles fine by hand as I have loaded some dummys up and they feed from the magazine. So whats your take on this?

My first reloading effort in 1973 was a RN Lyman 158 gr. mold used in a model 39. There was loading data in the then current Lyman manual, their 43rd if I recall correctly. You can only tell if the SWC will feed by trying it. You own the mold, so why not give it a try?

Thats what I like you ask a simple question and you get a good answer, right now I'm loading up 25 rounds only to see how it does. Good answer k22fan.

Seek and you shall find, I got to digging thru the stack of ole Ideal and Lyman manuals and one of them (cover torn off so I dont know which one) lists loads for a 160 grain rn and swc so I can use that data for the little swc that I want to try.
Bullseye start at 3.5 grs.and max at 4.8 grs.
Unique start at 3.5 grs. andmax at 4.5 grs.

In the 1990s I used a Saeco 150 gr. RN flat base 9 mm mold with good success in a Star model super B. I shot better than any of the other molds I tried in that Star. Its chamber was too tight to accept .357 bullets but it had a .357" groove diameter. The long bearing surface made up for the undersize bullet/bore relationship, or so I guessed. I don't recall the loads. You'll need to watch for tight case to chamber fit with deep seated 9mms if your chamber is on the thight side which most are not. You never know which home castings will work out best before experimenting.

Isn't the 360271 a 38 S&W bullet? If so, it may need considerable sizing to chamber. I seem to recall them being cut to drop .360 with pure lead & 2% tin.

You have a good point about the diameter & possible need for sizing bullets down more than is desirable for the most accurate bullets. I ignored the diameter portion of the mold name because Lyman has changed the diameter in the name of many their molds over the decades without actually changing the molds. The .38 mold I loaded into my model 39 had number XXX311. I forget what diameter was used in its name.
At the risk of repeating what everyone already knows, we need a little clearance around the case for it to release the bullet and not too tight a fit of the bullet in the lead to avoid pushing it back into the case to avoid excessive pressure.
On the topic of 9mms & cast bullet diameters, I've seen the accuracy of Browning marketed P35 Hi-Powers improved a lot by changing from 9mm molds to .38 molds. All of them I've seen measured had .357" groove diameters, unlike the Hungarian made copies which typically run .355".
