Default Lee factory crimp on Barnes TSX 30-30 bullet

I am reloading some Barnes 150 grain flat points. They are lead free bullets that are longer than a standard lead core bullet. In order to get the length required to cycle in my winchester 94 which is 2.540 the only option is to use a Lee Factory crimp,Using the grooves on the bullet make them too short. The grooves are mainly used to relieve stress and are a place for the metal to go when displaced. My question is,will a lee factory crimp hold the bullet in place under recoil? I am using IMR 3031 at 30 gr with a 150 TSX Barnes FP which would give me about 2000 fps. Anybody have thought on this? I know 30-30 is a medium cartridge and the recoil is medium at best,Should I be concerned.

I would call or email Barnes and ask them what they think should be done. I like the rifle LFCD and it works great with both my cast bullets from a Ranch Dog mold and the plated plinkers I like to load with Trail Boss.

Superfly, Barnes manual #4, page 234 calls for a COL of 2.470 for that bullet and a roll crimp for guns with a tubular magazine. You might load up a couple dummies and see how they cycle, might surprise you.

Edit to add: you know you're pushing max load don't you?

Default Thanks Pecos Bill

Yes,just a half a grain under max. With a load density of about 97%. I loaded them all the way to the firsf groove and rolled them good. I also loaded a few backed out about 7 thousanths below the groove so they would barely touch the lands. Loading them as listed in the Barnes book will have them jumping a bit into the lands. But thats what it calls for. It's my first time using copper bullets as I plan to hog hunt in California. And the Condor poisen rounds I use (lead) are no longer allowed. You can still use lead but only for target practice which is not regulated. I hope if I get checked the Fish and game is more gun savy than the last one. She tried to take my weapon for not having a serial number thinking it was a altered weapon,I explained it was made as a promotional Shotgun made before 1968 gun control act requiring all guns to have serial numbers. I made her call her supervisor and she turned beet red. And fish and game are the only law enforcement with college degrees.

Howdy Superfly,

I have used a lot of Barnes bullets in various rifle calibers but not this 30-30 bullet. However Barnes seem to work best with more bullet jump, around .050". So as long as they cycle I would try them seated short.

I used their 110 grain 30 caliber X's in a model 95 in 30-06 and they worked very well. Pushing them pretty fast they always went clear through a whitetail.

I really like the Barnes X of the various varieties as you can use a little lighter for caliber than standard weight bullet and still get excellent penetration.

Default Thanks KSCOWBOY

I loaded half at 30 gr of imr 3031 and the other half at28 gr of 3031 and I rolled them at the first groove. So lets see how they shoot jumping into the rifling. At 28 plus tax for 50,they had better be good. Instead of banning lead, whey not require hunters to bury their gut piles. It's just an excuse to curb hunting I think. Only thing left thats good in California is hog where I'm headed next year. Kern County which has the largest population of feral hogs in the state. Never could do the Javalina thing since it's not actually a hog. If it's not beef, pork, fish, chicken,Rabbit or deer,I aint interested.

Hey Superfly, doesn't Arizona ban lead based bullets in parts of the state along with Nevada? Just something I heard.

Good luck and enjoy the Peoples Republic of Los Angeles.

Default They are thinking about it

Some 22 condors have died from lead poisoning in the northern part of the state after eating carcases left by hunters ,so they say. Conservationists are pushing for a lead ban just like California. But in a pro gun state,it's going to be a lot harder to get through. So lets just wait and see. You can still use lead in Kalifornia, just to target practice. Here in AZ for the time being...the sky's the limit. We are a class 3 state, you can buy a smg if you can pass the background and have the money to back the buy. If you want to piss off a Arizonan, mess with his cigarettes, gas, and guns and you have a fight on your hands.
