Default Reloading Noob

With the elections looming closer each day and ammo prices going nowhere but North, I'm looking more seriously at reloading.

I'm looking for a recommendation on once-fired brass deals. Besides the gun range, where do you guys get your stuff?

Calibers I want to reload are 38 Special, 357 Sig and 45 ACP. I might also like to try reloading 7.62x54R for the Mosin.

Where is a good place to start as far as learning the basics and purchasing dies, bullets, primers, etc.? I don't want to spend money I don't need to on a single stage press if all I need a progressive instead. I just need some guidance from you reloading gurus.

Start with a reloading manual from lyman or whomever and give it a good read. Then figure our how much ammo you use and that ,and your budget ,will tell you whether a single stage, turret or progressive is the way to go.

Get a copy of the ABC's of reloading, Amazon, youtube has some videos of various quality that'll aim you in the right direction. Do lots of reading.

a progressive press should be supplemented by a single stage for its simplicity. a low cost C frame lee or even the Lee hand press will suffice for load development and other low volume runs of test or special collection rounds. It just beats live gutting a progressive presses setup for 20 rounds or less.

Nothing wrong with starting with a single stage. Why waste money on a progressive? IMHO if you were to do that you would get frustrated in a hurry. Get a turret press and take your time to learn all the ins and outs of reloading. Its not all about speed.I just loaded 200 rounds of 44 mag ammo in less than 2 hours on a single stage!

Regarding the once fired brass question, a good place to look is the internet. I've found pretty good deals in the misc sections on this forum, The Firing Line, Glock Forum and others.

Lot's of luck!

Lots of good advice above. Only thing I can add is to find someone who is reloading and ask them if you can hang out with them and learn some things prior to jumping in head first. Most of us are happy to help out and pass on what we have learned. I have had to buy most of my experience and have found it is much better (and cheaper) to learn from someone else's mistakes and successes. Good luck!

Where are you in Oklahoma? I'd be happy to share what little I know.

Regarding your brass question, I get once fired brass from Oncefiredbrass.com ,www.oncefiredbrass.com and Blue Star Cartridge & Brass.Blue Star Cartridge & Brass Online Catalog

Read the suggested manuals (ABCs and Lyman's) then you'll get an idea of the reloading equipment that suits your reloading needs. I started with a Lee Loader, slow, but it kept me in ammo for my one centerfire for several months before I went with a single stage...
