Primer shortage
Anyone noticing a primer shortage? It seems to have started again, at least in the Mesa, AZ area in the chain stores. Sportsmans Warehouse and Bass Pro do not have small pistol primers and Sportsmans said it's been hit and miss whether or not they get any in their shipments. Don't know about the local gun shops, haven't checked them yet. Guess I should have gone to the last gun show.

At Sportsman I believe I saw $36.99 on the empty shelf where WSP would go. They did have small and large rifle and I believe I saw one package (100) of WSPM. Bass Pro also said they had WSPM.

My LGS has no problem with primers except an occasional shortage of one particular primer or the other at times.
Price? The standard primers run $29.95 to $31.95/ thousand, magnums and Remington slightly more.

Always keep plenty of primers on hand. I did pick up some small pistol Fed last week and that brought me up to around 16,000 of various sizes on hand.

I was at Cabela's in Glendale, AZ two weeks ago and they were out of CCI SPP & SRP. I was able to buy Remington, but there were only a few boxes left on the shelf. Hopefully it won't get as bad as it did a few years ago.
There was a very adequate supply of powders and bullets, as well as loaded ammo.

I just bought 1k WSP @ Pioneer Outdoor Sports in Bolivar, TN for $40.
Seemed kinda steep, but it's nice to have a local gun store that stocks reloading stuff too - So I support them.
No where else around here anyway and the shipping on hazmats is just too much......

Sportsmans Warehouse had an adequate supply of powder also, I didn't look at ammo so can't comment on that.

After 2008, you should have started putting some extra components back every chance that you get.
That way you'll not be faced with these temporary shortage problems or concerns
about primers, powder, or whatnot. If you're really serous, you could have gotten a
supply of lead and favorite bullet moulds and start reading and learning how to cast your own bullets.
Your time spent with political or other worries could be spent Casting, Loading or Shooting.
You could be the NEW AMMUNITION "PREPPER", and just maybe the DISCOVERY CHANNEL will give you a reality show.

There has not been a primer shortage in my house since Bill Clinton was elected and the rumor mill started rolling. I promised myself I would never be short again.

You can almost view ammunition and handloading components as investment items. The chances of them being worth less later on are slim.

I do cast my own bullets but with my age (71), physical problems (mild Parkinsons and severe arthritis) I'm probably not going to be able to do this much longer so don't want to stock up too much and belonging to a club that has an outdoor range, the summer months in AZ are not conducive for reloading in my garage, casting or going to the range, 113 today.

When I get down to 20,000 I am below my emergency stocking level, this as well as powder and 3 tons of lead ingots.

"3 Tons" That will only make a maximum of 182,608 230gr 45's bullets--you sure you have enough?? If you are shooting a newer model Tommy gun, at 600 rounds per minute it will only keep you going for 5 hours non-stop.

I don't know about a shortage but the prices have sure gone up. My LGS wants $37.99 for 1K small pistol primers for all brands they sell. I guess they sell them but they are much cheaper on line even with shipping and haz mat fees if you buy enough at one time. The last batch I bought online were $25.99 per 1K and that was just a week ago.

I was up at the CMP stores at Camp Perry today, and there was no shortage of primers there. The shelves were stocked to the hilt.

Anyone claiming their is a primer shortage is full of it!
I returned from Camp Perry and both Champions Choice and Champions Shooters Supply had a huge inventory of Federal, CCI, Winchester and Remington primers - average price ca $28/M.
Let's stop the scare tactics. That's what caused the "shortage" the last time.

I picked up 2000 CCI small pistol primers at the Mesa Sportsman's about a month ago and I noticed the supply was low. They did have plenty of powder. I work nights so when I reload on my days off I start at about 2 am so it's a little cooler in the garage. Been here too long when I can call 95 "cooler"

No shortage around where I am.
During the Obama shortage I could have sold 100 primers for what 1000 cost right now. (but of course I did not) I did however lend out several hundred and only wanted them replaced when they became available again.
I have all the primers I need right now because i bought a little at a time ever since the "shortage" let up. Luckily I have yet to pay more than $30/1000 and probably never will.

I travel around the MO,KS,NE area and I often see "sales" on primers. No shortage around here. I'm still overstocked from the last "shortage".

Last gunshow a dealer mentioned Winchester primers would be drying up due to a huge contract/order from the military. This was expected to last more than a year. If true, then people that normally buy Winchester will be buying other brands, and a shortage seems possible.

Really? Hereabouts Winchester primers have gone down in price from ~$33/K to ~$30/K and are plentiful. I like Winchester primers and use them whenever possible.

No shortage here. No price change either. Gander Mountain is still very proud of their $40 primers. Most other gun shops are $33-$35 with a sale every now and then offering them at $26. Eastern Block junk is a buck or two cheaper but I'm not buying.

I wonder how many of you realize that your panic buying is what creates your "shortage"? You all must be on the payroll of the component manufacturers - helping them clear out excessive inventory and jack up prices.
Not too bright.

Give me a break already everyone, all I did when I started this thread was point out my observations and ask if anyone else had any problems. I now have a total of 2,200 primers, which unfortunately, is probably enough to last me the rest of my shooting days. If me buying 1K of primers to bring my total to 2,200 primers is hoarding and causing panic buying then so be it.

$3.29 at our big box store. But I recall getting small pistol CCI's in the late 50's for $7.50 a thousand.

There is a shortage of primers for less than $25.00 a brick.
I like it better when they are under $20. I've got to find some more Murom regular primers for around that price.
I paid about $30.00 for a brick of Fiocchi small pistol, but they have 1500 to the brick, and are now one of my favorite primers! I just can't find any more.

That's not hoarding or not even a very good start. My wife and I usually put over 1000 rounds downrange in a single year, and then the kids come and visit, and then I decide to introduce a couple of new shooters to the sport, and........

My thoughts exactly. Stop wasting your time at the big chains paying a premium. LOOK for a good deal in bulk.
Last time I bought primers I stocked up and paid under $20 per 1K.

There's many of us who look forward to shooting matches every week, we just don't want to go through all the BS we went through finding primers again. The shelves of my local supplier are packed to the hilt at this time, few are buying. I'm sure he appreciates my "steady" business.
