I'm still kind of new at reloading. Right now I load only for 9mm. The two powders I've used have been 231 and Universal. They both meter well through my Lee Pro Disc measure (although totaly different weights for the size of disc) and I get some pretty accurate loads in the midrange of both powders using 124gr plated bullets. I'm almost out of powder and am thinking about trying Hodgdon "Longshot". It seems to have the greatest spread charge wise which I'm thinking would be beneficial using my Pro Disc and also seems to produce slightly lower pressures than a lot of powders. Does anyone here have any experience with it. How well does it meter through your powder dropper? Any problems associated with it? Thanks.

LS is stuff of legends in some 12 Ga shot loads. very high velocities without blowing patrons. thats what it is designed to do and it does this brilliantly. Ive tried it in a few cartridge loads, I dont really care for it outside a shotgun. it just don't seem to act right

Tip from decades of loading experience:
Some of the "benefits" of using a powder too slow for the cartridge include unburned powder, lots of soot, and inconsistent velocity.

I'd stick with the many medium powders traditionally used for 9mm unless you are wanting to load "Major 9" for a custom USPSA Open gun. "Major 9" are too hot for normal 9mm handguns, and use slow powders like HS-6 to make USPSA Major Power in Open. Universal will give you all the speed you need from a normal 9mm.

I wasn't really looking for more speed but in any case it doesn't sound like either of you was too impressed with it in small pistol cartridges.

Longshot is just fine in the 9MM and superb in the 40S&W. Depending on the firearm, it is my first choice for either......

The only pistol loads I like Longshot in are .44mag and 10mm. Use mostly Universal in 9mm, never saw any gains with Longshot but used more powder to match those loads.

Try some power pistol.

Barnes does recommend Longshot in 9mm for use with their 115 gr all copper bullet.

I use Unique for the vast majority of my 9mm/.38/.357 loads. It may not be sexy or trendy, but it does what I want it to.

I use Longshot all the time....mostly for the Glock 19 and I love the stuff...it also does well in my 28ga. shotgun...my other top 9mm powder is Accurate #7....both are very good.

Since you're new at loading, I'll try to summarize all the answers you got, which, believe it or not, are consistent.
If you are going to continue loading modest speed plated bullets, Longshot is not a good choice. Using light loads of slow powders is often problematical.
However, if you want to load high-end speeds with jacketed bullets, Longshot will perform well.
Given a choice, I would rather use Power Pistol for high speed jacketed loads in 9mm, because its burn rate is almost perfect for this application.
There are a baker's dozen powders that work well in 9mm, depending on the bullet and how fast you want to go.

My son's favorite 9mm load is a 124gr FMJ bullet over Longshot. It has plenty of snap and accuracy and feels a lot like factory ammo. It's his hands down favorite. I also like HS-6 and W231.

I use Longshot for both 9mm and 40 S&W. I also use Red Dot for 9mm, 40, and 45ACP reloads. I have found shotgun powders to be very economical when used for handgun cartridges. If you google '9mm longshot loads' you'll get plenty of responses.

I have used very SLOW powders in testing my 9mm loads but......
Unique and HS6 are the slowest that I have found for maximum fps with all bullets used, for a ball and flake powder.

SR4756 is just to slow with heavy bullets and Blue Dot fills the case up with not enough powder with light or heavy bullets in less than 4" barrels to get high fps vel.
I have even tried IMR 4227, that will give great low vel. accuracy but will not work 100% in ejection.

Medium speed powders work the best with the 9mm......
any slower and fps and ejection go down hill.

I used unique and longshot in 12 ga. loads....... Longshot might work with the 9mm, just never was
able to buy any after I ran out, to find out.
