Default Pan lubing recipe

I'm buying another mold and thought I would try my luck at pan lubing. All my other38/357 bullets have been tumble lubed. My new mold is a Lee 2-Cavity Bullet Mold 358-158-RF 38 Special mold. I saw a pan lube recipe using 1 lb paraffin wax. 1 lb Vasoline, 2 table spoons Johnsons paste wax, red crayons for color and 2 oz of Lee's alox lube. Has anyone tried that or have a similar recipe. I also read that you should add the paraffin last as it could make the lube too hard. I think there are just as many recipes out there as Campbell's have soups.

I will be using 6.5 grain of Unique in the 357 case.

Sounds okay, although I personally would add a few ounces of Marvel Mystery Oil!

Sounds messy, I use a Lyman 450 sizer. Recipe sounds okay. Zombie loads work better with yellow crayon.

Try castboolits.com (that's how they spell it).
They do this stuff.

I used to use the old NRA 50:50 Alox:Beeswax for pan lubing some two diameter rifle bullets. It's a literal pain in the neck for more than a handfull of bullets. I use a Star lube/sizer for both my pistol and rifle bullets.

That's pretty complicated. Consider 50/50 beeswax & lithium automotive grease. Beeswax is stickier and more elastic than paraffin, which tends to be a bit crumbly.

There are some proven two or three component recipes for lubes over at castboolits.com Boolit Lube ! - Cast Boolits I rarely use paraffin anymore and use beeswax for my base/carrier. Some really simple lubes are; beeswax softened with Marvels mystery Oil, or Crisco, or oil (vegetable, Olive, mineral, etc.), grease (lubriplate, Lucas tacky red, moly). Sometimes lanolin is added for stickieness. A couple of my favorite lubes don't let the bullets "pop out" of the cake so I just use "cookie cutters" I made from stainless steel tubing reamed a few thousandths larger than the bullets to cut them out of the cake. I started pan lubing mebbe 15 years ago and have found no need to go to a lubersizer.

I've been using 'Darr Lube' ( Bees wax/vaseline base) for years in rifle and pistols with good results.
I thought I would share my lube system. (I can't say I invented it, but my set up is simple and it works.)
The thing about melting lube is that you have to use a double boiler. If you use direct heat, the lube will catch fire and/or explode. VERY MESSY!
This what i use.
You will need 2 10" square cake pans. I like the ones with handles.
4 fired cartridge cases.
First step. Place bullets in one of the pans ( I do 50 - 100 at a time). Pour your lube in to a level that leaves point of the bullets above the lube. All you need is to cover the grease grooves. When the lube is cool, remove the lube cake and push the bullets out the bottom of the lube cake.
You now have lubed bullets and a cake of lube with holes.
Put your cake of lube back in the pan and push your next batch of slugs in the holes.
This is the neat part.
Take the second pan, put it on the stove, place the cartridge cases in the corners, fill with water to the tops of the cases. Place the lube pan in the second pan. You now have a double boiler.
Just turn on the heat till the lube around the bullets melts.
Simple.

a note to pilgrim's post.
if the cake gets "stuck" and won't come out of the pan, put it in the freezer (after the lube has cooled and hardened). If it still won't come out with a gentle push, turn it upside down over a soft towel and go for a walk.
this handy hint came from our friends at castboolits. Made my life much easier.

I use 50/50, lithium grease and bee's wax from new toilet bowl seals from Lowe's, Home Depot or Walmart with 2 to 4 oz. of liquid Alox. I use an old Crisco can( 2-3 lb ?) on an electric hot plate, outside. Stir it a little before it starts to set. I bought a pint of Alox on Ebay. Don't remember how much it cost, but it goes a long way! I use mine in Lyman Lubrisizers.

I would have mentioned the freezer trick but the post was already getting long.
One more trick. I use a bullet seating screw from an old RCBS die to push the bullets from the cake. A friend uses the top punch from a lube sizer.
