Default RCBS Sizer Die out of spec. ????

Been using the RCBS Die Set since 05 for 270wsm in a Rem 700 have always had a little trouble chambering rounds.....fast forward to today got another mod 700 in 270wsm same rounds will not chamber. Called RCBS and they said gun chamber is out of spec. took my loads to a friend with a Browning 270wsm and he can't chamber them either. Tried his loads in my guns and they chamber like a hot knife through butter in both guns. My question is how can I get an accurate measurement?

cerrosafe chamber or in this case die cast. I would call RCBS and send it back they are very good with warranties. The problem may be in how far its pushing the shoulder back this would be difficult to measure from a casting.

Bob,
There is so much that it can be but I'd start by comparing one of the handloads that did not chamber and you buddy's handloads that did.
If you know someone who works as a machinist or toolmaker ask them to take both cartridges to work and measure them on an optical comparator. They then can compare the shoulder measurements and locations, OAL of cartridge taper etc. It should give you an indication if its the die or chamber.

It's possible there is something wrong with the dies, but first I'd take them to the friend that made the loads that worked in your rifle and have him load some rounds with them. And make sure you take the lock rings off first, it may just be the way you adjusted them.

Bob,

Send the die and three once fired cases to RCBS with a letter explaining the problem you're having, They should be able to either tell you the chamber's bad, or fix /replace the die.

Good shooting.

Before you get all involved with the complicated checking, I'd try turning the die in a quarter turn and sizing a few to be absolutely sure it's not just the die adjustment--very common mistake.

You DO want the sizing die, to have a firm touch, on the shell holder.

One thing I've learned loading the WSM cartridges is the problem you are experiencing is common. You can not partial size the cases. Follow the directions RCBS includes with their dies and set them up so your press "cams over" during the resizing stroke.

You can easily measure your cases and compare them to your friend's with the Hornady LNL Headspace Guage Kit.

Thanks for all the replies...my buddy and I swapped dies today and each started from scratch. We loaded 10 each...with same results the ones I loaded all chambered fine and the ones he loaded with my dies would not chamber in mine or his guns. I will send the die along with 3 once fired cases to RCBS and let them figure out what're the problem is and I'll post the results

I had a problem with a Hornady die set MANY years ago, your problem may be similar.

The die was perfect, the little ball inside the case that expanded the case upon retraction was oversize!!

My cases would just barely go in the gun, but, the force to extract that sizing ball was so great, the operation ruined my press!! It was not a Hornady press.

I contacted Hornady, they agreed there was a problem and sent me a new die set AND A NEW RELOADING PRESS!!

Don't get me started on the primers that I bought with crooked anvils!!

I believe that RCBS will make it right. I sent my old 10-10 scales to them and they came back rebuilt and working great. It cost some for postage but that's not all, they even replaced my bent, beat up pan.

I had a problem with an ingot mould and they said,"send it in". I talked to a welder at work, he gave me a stainless rod and told me what to do and welded it myself. It wasn't worth sending in. I have no doubt they would have sent a new one.

I probably have 15 sets of RCBS dies, used lots and they are flawless. Bad ones can and do slip through. I'd imagine you'll just get a replacement.

Please let us know the outcome. As Shooters/Reloaders your experience helps us decide what company to buy from.

Best, Rick

I had a similar issue with a Savage model 10 in 308 years ago.
I could not adjust the die down enough to get the bolt to close on a sized casing. Most factory rounds would drop into the chamber just fine but some needed a bit of effort on the bolt to get it to close. I borrowed a set of headspace gauges and found out the bolt would only close about 90% of the way on the GO gauge.

Rather than sending the gun or dies back, I laid some 180 grit emery paper on a piece of glass and sanded approximately .002 off the top of the shell holder.

Problem solved.

I use mostly Redding dies but know from my own experience that RCBS Customer Service is outstanding. In the exchanges I've had with them, RCBS has been beyond generous, every bit as good as Dillon whose warranty work is legendary.

Regards.
