44 Mag / 44 Spl. shotshells
I picked up some shot capsules for loading shotshell loads for my Model 29. Inside the box, Speer included a sheet of paper that showed the recipes for both the 44 mag and the 44 special using the shot capsules. Included are data for Win 231, IMR 700-X, Bullseye, Unique, HP-38, and HS6. I have none of these powders. In fact, the only pistol powders that I have are Titegroup and Win 296. Of course, I'm certain that the Win 296 is a no-go for shotshell loads. What about Titegroup though? Has anyone loaded 44 shotshells using Titegroup? It's so hard to find even a pound of powder these days and if you do, you're paying some gouger probably double or triple the retail value for the privilege.

Do not even think about 296 for those. Titegroup is in the right burn rate range, but I would not chance a guess at the number of grains you should use. I'd give Speer a call and see what they would recommend. Years ago I loaded 100 of the .44 capsules and as I recall the powder amount was not critical, but I'd call the manufacturer before interpolating the amount of powder to use.

If the manufacturer can't help with load data for the powders you have , you might want to get a pound of Unique. Can be used in a lot of different loadings besides shot capsules. In the 44 special , cast bullets and Unique are made for each other. For years Unique was the only powder I used in loading for 6 different pistols ( both cast and jacketed bullets ) and cast bullets in 3 rifles. I finally broke down and got some Bullseye and Red Dot for light target loads cause Unique doesn't like to be lightly loaded, needs a certian amount of pressure to burn completely. I am sure you can find a use for it, older powder with lots of available data.

shotshells
I have loaded the speer shot capsulesin 357, 44 and 45LC....have always used bullseye or Unique.....the recommendations to check with Speer regarding loading with anything that is not on their list is sound advice.

Looking at a burn rate chart; Titegroup is right next to Bullseye -- So it should be a good powder for shotshells. Your capsule will weigh 138-140 grains when loaded.
I use Power Pistol in 44 and Red Dot in 38 shotshells. Light loads SOMETIMES pattern better, but 44s seem to be more forgiving than 38s.
Be sure and crimp or you'll tie up your cylinder. I've never broken a capsule from crimping; although others have.

The recommendation to crimp well is true. I remember I used to keep one or two rounds of the CCI aluminum cased .44 shot as the last loads in the chambers of my 629 while out hog hunting. If I ran across a snake that needed dispatching I'd advance the cylinder so the hammer would fall on a shot load. One day I fired a couple of my full bore hunting loads. When I got back to the house and unloaded the revolver it was obvious that the shot loads had grown considerably. After that the shot loads stayed in belt cartridges loops until needed.
