Default need some advice on 9mm cast bullet loads

I recently purchased some 147gr flat point 147's and some 130gr HP's. the only cast bullets I've loaded before have been 124gr RN's. I use Universal powder and am having a hard time finding reloading data. The Hodgdon site lists a 130gr cast RN bullet and shows a starting load of 3.8gr universal with an OAL of 1.150. However, in order to clear the rifling on my M&P I need an OAL of no more than 1.111. Has anyone here loaded any 130gr cast HP's and if so what load are you using behind them and what OAL are you sticking to. On the 147gr FP's I'm having no problems with OAL as listed either by Hodgdon or by Lyman for their cast 147's but cannot find any info using Universal. these day I cannot just go buy a different powder since nothing is available and I managed to dig up 3lbs of Universal. the loadings by Lyman seem pretty conservative which should be safe but they don't list anythig for Universal powder.

Especially with cast bullets in handguns getting the data with just exactly the components you have is sometimes difficult to impossible. At times we have to rely on our experience and common sense and make judgements from there.

If you need to shorten your OAL by .039" from a listed minimum load then I would lower my powder charge a couple of tenths of a grain then work up. Even if you started at the listed minimum you will be well below a max charge even at the shorter length.

Also keep in mind, published data differs a bit one to another and is merely a guide to the reloader. It is not a Bible.

I could not have said it better myself parisite. That is a good summary of how I would approach the problem.

By the way, lyman cast manual says universal 3 to 3.4 for a 147 lead at 1.058 It also says universal 3.6 to 4.0 at 1.160 for a 140 lead.

So, for the 130 grn, what I would do is start with the 147 grn load at 1.058 of 3 grns and work my way up to the 140 grn load of 4.0 looking for accuracy or pressure signs. My bet is somewhere around 3.5 to 3.7 is the sweet spot of good accuracy and reliability for ejection.

All cautions apply and please verify my data yourself. It is from the 4th edition cast

Thanks guys, all good advice. I talked to the fella I bout the bullets from and he say's he's been oading the 130's on top of 3.8gr of Universal at 1.125 oal so I'd guess that starting at about 3.6gr should put me in the ballpark. For the 147's I'll start with the published data from Lyman since I can actualy go a little longer on the oal.
