Question Winchester 240gr velocity question...

I was shooting my 629-4 with a friend today. He had a chronograph set up to check the reloads he had made and all we shot were in the 1000 range.
I had a half of a box of Winchester "white box" 240gr ammo with me that had been in a cabinet in my garage for over a year.
I mention the way it was stored to help get an answer for the numbers on the crono from the 3 rounds I fired.
1780 to 1810 out of a 6 inch bbl Mod 629 seemed like way too much to me.

I don't know, I don't reload and I just assume that shooting between the skyscreens is correct for a reading. The distance from the gun to the crono was around 6 feet.

Is that velocity correct for this ammo?

GF

Winchester claims 1,180 FSP for that ammo. http://www.winchester.com/Products/h...ges/Q4240.aspx I'd suspect the reading that you got from your chronograph.

Six feet is probably too close. What you are measuring was most likely the shock wave going throught the chronograph. Put the chronograph about 12 - 15 feet away and try again.

Yea, I believe pieces of your revolver would have been going through the chrono if those readings were accurate.

I thought it might be user error because of the reading.

I'll try it again at the 12 to 15 feet you suggest.

Thanks for the help.

Well, let me put it like this: I do reload and those numbers are probably true if you have a 20" barrel!

All kidding aside, I do shoot 240gr XTPs at that 1800fps velocity only from a carbine. Those same loads from a revolver with a normal length barrel, 4-6", produce somewhere in the 1400fps range. That being said, if you shoot a 240gr XTP from a M629 and it gives you the velocity that I get, you will know for sure that you have your hands on a 44Magnum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your loads, if the chrono was right, would feel like someone hit you in the hand with a baseball bat! So, unless folks are going to start calling you "One Hand GF" I doubt that those were going that fast. Just guessing but.....Highly unlikely.

Error, error, error

To close. What brand of Chronograph?? Easy way to test is bring a 22 lr handgun and fire several test rounds. See what those are, do they come close to what is on the box or web site??

Light 38 spl test can be held at 8 feet but any weapon with muzzle blase is better at ten feet or more depending on how bad the blast is.
Shotguns are shot at 3-5 feet to protect the units arms from the wads and pellets that spread with distance.

Good luck with the next test.

It just occurred to me. If your Win. WB were 1,800 and his hand loads were 1,000, how slow were his hand loads?
