I often use a 230 grain LSWC bullet with enough Unique to send it along
at around 900 or 1,000 fps.
Accurate and good for plates or pins without too much recoil to slow
you target to target. It nearly duplicates the old Remington .41
"Police Load."
Have also used 210s, and 225 grain LSWC bullets at the same speed.

What weight and type of projectile do you have available to you?
I do not load many moderate. Usually light or max.
I love loading the Remington 170SJHP over 25.5 grains of H110, but that is not moderate.
I load the plated Berrys 210s over 7.6 grains of 231. This could go warmer
I load either my 215LSWC or 210LHP over 7 grains of Unique for a nice light load.

My standard for years has been a cast swc of 210-220 and 7.0 of Unique.

I like 8.5gr of Unique with a commercial 215gr SWC for most applications. Though not really a target load per se' neither is it a full power load, it is however very accurate. Not knowing how experienced you are or what bullets you plan on using, just be careful when using commercial cast bullets at low velocities. Most commercial cast bullets are cast around a BHN of 16, when driven at lower pressures and velocities it's not uncommon to get leading. As long as you stay at or above 7.5gr of Unique you should be ok.
For full power hunting loads I really like 18.5gr of 2400 under a Montana Bullet Works H&G #258 215gr Keith bullet. This bullet actually weighs closer to 220gr as Elmer specified. This is another accurate load with plenty of power to spare. I also worked up to Keiths' load (Keith actually used 20.0gr with the #258, but some claim 2400 is faster now than it used to be so I felt it prudent to stop at 19.0gr) of 19gr 2400 with this bullet. One wouldn't think that an increase of only 0.5gr of powder would make much of a difference. I'm here to tell you it certainly does, I and others around me found the recoil, muzzle blast, and concussion to be very obnoxious as well. There is a big difference between that load and factory ammo for sure. However it is amazingly accurate even more so than the 18.5gr load. I'm just not willing to subject myself to that level of abuse, so I stick with the 18.5gr loading.
A fellow member and very accomplished handgun hunter that goes by the handle of Sixshot, took a friend on a moose hunt with a load vey similar to the above. The bullet struck the briskett and went through about 4 feet of moose, said moose got very ill and laid down. I hope he sees your post and can chime in.
Sorry for the long winded post, but you asked for pet loads of my favorite handgun cartridge and I couldn't help myself.

Back in my .41 Mag days I used Blue Dot with excellent results. I understand that powder is no longer recommended. Too bad as it worked great in my Blackhawk.

My plinking loads comprise 9.7 grains of Unique and a 210 grain Berry plated bullet, which results in 1200 fps muzzle velocity. My bear repellant round is 21.2 grains of 'Lil Gun behind a Cast Performance 265 grain LWFNGC, with a muzzle velocity right at 1400 fps.

PET LOADS
I fine that the little feeder mice stuffed down the barrel work better than the Gerbils. Hamsters for 44 Mag and above.

I have several cast bullet designs from Lyman, Saeco and Hensley & Gibbs in the 210-220 gr. range, all perform extremely well with 7.0 grs. of Unique (offhand the loads stay within a 3" circle at 25 yds, unless I screw up). The load is also very easy on the brass. The other benefit is that the load works out to an even 1000 rds per pound of powder.
Take care,
Steve
