Mag Primer Depth Question

Are the Mag primers taller than the regular primers.

I as looking at a video from someone and they mentioned when using the Mag primer, the pocket might need to be reemed deeper. Is this true ?

Never heard that one before. If you think about it, it would be counter productive. Magnum primers are used for specific powders, not necessarily for magnum cartridges. So....you auger out the primer pocket for powder XYZ and later decide to switch over to powder ABC....not the primer pocket is too deep and you get light primer strikes?

That is what i was thinking. You would have to seperate you brass etc.

I will have to run some magnum primers in my loads-all I could find.

I've had to use mag primers when standards weren't available and didn't notice a difference

No. Magnum primers are dimensionally the same as standard primers. The difference is in the priming compound, and sometimes in the thickness & hardness of the primer cup. Since you didn't specify what you're working with, I'll tell you that all small primers have the same physical dimensions, but are not interchangeable straight across the board. Large rifle primers are taller than large pistol primers, and won't seat properly in handgun cases. If you change any component in a reloading "recipe", you need to start back with the beginning loads for your original recipe and work you loads up (or down) as necessary. Failure to do so could cause excessive pressures, poor performance, etc.

No, withing the same group (pistol, rifle) the mag primers are the same size.

Small pistol is the same size as small rifle.

A small pistol Magnum has a lot more energy than a small rifle primer and a regular pistol so you need to adjust your powder down to start level. Especially high pressure rounds like 9mm and 40SW

I agree. FWIW; anybody can make a video and be an "expert". Get your info from a reliable, published manual/text. Anyone who would tell you to ream your primer pockets so you can use magnum primers not only has no idea what he's talking about, he's dangerous...

My big problem w/ YouTube vids, You have NO idea if the guy making the vid knows what he is doing. As noted, the mag priemrs are dimensionally the same as std.

I take some of those videos w/grain of Salt. From reading it didn't sound right.
Hear are the primers I have and when I use the Mag primers I was thinking of going on the lower end of the powder scale.

Using them for pistol only (.45acp/38spl) in matches when ever I can get my press here. Missed three already but that is ok, I can take my tim and get it right.

Magnum primers will burn a little longer and a little hotter than standard primers. If you are not up near the top end of the pressure range you might not need to drop the charge weights. Just think, Winchester's only Large Pistol Primers is rated for both standard and magnum loads and many who use them don't even realize the difference. Many don't change their recipe either with no ill effects...
