Default Crimp for 8 shot Model 627

While shooting some .357 handloads through my Mod 627, rounds #7 and 8 bound up the cylinder because the bullets had jumped the crimp. I have used this load for a long time with about the same amount of crimp but always in 6 shot revolvers of various types. 158 gr LSWC over 14.5 gr of 2400. So be sure to use an adequate crimp in those 8 shooters! I enjoy this revolver a lot, you Mod 27 guys (like me) should not sell this gun short till you try one.

Just goes to show, that you can learn something new every day.....................

funny how you never had #6 slip in the old "Six shooters" with the same crimp.

I have a light, medium and Heavy crimp for my lead loads
per target, medium and "Mag" loads with my 158 Lswc's.
At 1320 fps a HVY crimp was needed with just six rounds.

Nothing like having an automatic inertia bullet puller. Try turning the crimp die down about 1/2 turn and see if that does the trick.

Many years back I had trouble keeping 300 grain .430's in every brand of .44 mag brass I tried.

This was prior to Lee's factory crimp die coming to market. The FCD's came out about the time I gave up shooting heavy magnum loads, but it did work.

I'll stoke up a .45 Colt a bit now, but that's about as strong as I go. The seater's built in crimp does just fine.

Have you tried randomly loading six, or are you pretty well convinced it's simply the longer bumpy ride causing it?

Are you using RP headstamped brass and Lee dies?

Like Cdog I'm also using Lee FCD's for .357's and .44's.

I use RCBS dies and crimp with the seating die and load a variety of headstamps. For some time I have been thinking about using a different system to crimp but never really had a good reason to do so until now. Tell me about the Lee dies you mention. And what do you like about Remingtom brass?

Seat and (adequately) crimp in separate operations and I think your problem is solved.

Probably two things happening. The last bullet has two more bumps to deal with and the 8 shooter would weigh less by whatever the steel from two chambers would weigh.
