Default Hornady Powder Measure and One Shot Cleaner

I am in the process of reviewing the instructions for the Hornady LNL press. They have a section/video about tearing down the entire powder measure and cleaning w/the Hornady One Shot.

With that said, do I have to buy their cleaner or is there another one on the market? I don't mind one way or the other if it is available, just wondering if there something else since demand is high for all types of reloading things.

I also see he sprayed INSIDE where the power goes but did not say he cleaned it. The Hornady One Shot leaves a lube behind so I'm confused on that as well. I would have to believe he did clean it out.

Thanks,
Jim

P.S. You don't have to watch him tare down the powder measure, they are there just for info if needed.

I wouldn't want any oil or cleaners to contaminate the powder so whatever you use, make sure to get all of it cleaned up.

Get a can of Gun Scrubber (the used to have two kinds) I believe it is only one now. It says safe for all guns (polymer) I would not spray the plastic powder hopper. Its mostly Hexane.

Don't spray it all over your hands like the guy in the video,

OK. I don't know about gun scrubber. After use, do I need to oil/lube anything like the One Shot does ?

I'll look and see where I can buy some.

Thanks,
Jim

I watched the video because I'd need to do it anyhow when my press arrives

@~5:00 he says you want the inside of the podwer tube completely clean and dry. (No way he got that rag through it though lol)

@~5:50 he says make sure the inside of the rotor is completely clean and dry.

And so on. So my own feeling is no matter what you clean the grease off with, you have to get areas of powder contact absolutely clean and dry. The fact that he's using Hornady's One Shot indicates that, when used this way, it comes off when wiped dry.

Never used the stuff myself, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it as shown in the HORNADY video lol.

ETA: Reading further, the Dynalube used in the gun cleaner product is the same lube used in the case lube product. The case lube product is allowed inside the case, and does not have to be cleaned out. It doesn't contaminate powder. The lube is removed from the outside of brass cases for other reasons.

The Oneshot cleaner is actually pretty good stuff. It's one of those newer "dry film" lube left behind cleaners. The preservative grease film will be all over

EVERYTHING

when you get the press. You will have to strip everything down and you don't want to get this stuff on the rubber as it will ruin it. Take all the little o rings out of everything. However, it's not the best thing at preventing rust. I use Eezox for that and you will want to use something as this thing will have parts rusting on you before your eyes.

Just use the Hornady cleaner. It works very well and yes you need to hose out the inside of the measure, even the plastic hopper. After this, wipe off the cleaner and then let it sit for a few minutes for the cleaner in the hard to reach areas evaporate before you try to use it.

Some Powder Measure plastic tubes REACT with the chemicals in powder and etch or discolor the tubes.

I cut to fit a CLEAR PLASTIC SHEET PROTECTOR to go into the tube as a barrier between the tube and powder.

Even on Dillon's I do this, Dillon's are NOT supposed to react with powder though.

I don't like Oneshot case lube for rifle cases. That is still the only case lube that I've had a stuck case when using it. Maybe if you use steel dies instead of carbide and are sizing straight wall cases then it works well enough. I prefer Imperial Sizing Wax when full length sizing rifle cases.

Just to point out the obvious- there are two ONE SHOT products available from Hornady; the case lube and the cleaner/degreaser. Make sure you're using the right one! I use the cleaner/degreaser to clean out my powder measure and wipe what I can. It does not leave behind much residue and I have had no issues with powder clinging to the measure. I love the stuff (cleaner/degreaser) and use it on just about everything now.

I have the Hornady LNL AP press. When it was first being unboxed and assembled, I went the cheap route and just used brake cleaner and carb cleaner to try to get the packing oil off of the parts.

To me, after cleaning the powder measure with brake cleaner, the actuation of the measure felt sticky. I needed to order a few more odds and ends anyway, so I ended up ordering some cans of the Hornady Dry Lube/Cleaner.

I'm actually convinced it's pretty decent stuff for cleaning the press. I think the powder measure actuates more smoothly when I clean it with the Hornady Dry Lube product. I have seen this product for sale at Cabelas and my LGS as well, so you might be able to source it locally.

I'm usually one of those guys that would just rather use a $2 can of generic cleaner than pay a higher price for something that might just have a different brand name. But in this case, I do think that the Dry Lube cleaner does a good job on cleaning and maintaining certain parts of the press. Also, don't forget to grease the press up.

Question, does the Hornady (LNL AP) Powder Measure come w/a Pistol or Rifle rotor from the box?

Thanks,
Jim

Dont know which one is installed - but both come in the box

Midway Listing for Hornady LNL AP

But only one rotor - so, before ordering the Ergo handle . . .

My AP arrives Tuesday . . . but the Hornady Cleaner doesn't arrive until Thursday. Most of the complaints I've heard about the press occur shortly after delivery, so I'm gonna carefully follow the assembly and prep instructions, too.

On Thursday

My brand new LnL came with the large rifle rotor install and a bag with the the small rifle rotor and another bag of parts for the small rifle primer feed (both large and small rifle setup complete).

I used gun scrubber to degrease everything and it worked fine to my newbie "feel". Powder fed fine and believe me I ran a BUNCH powder charges through to a case and then weighed it until I was absolutely positive things were as they were supposed to be. When I cleaned up after my first real loads all the powder poured back into the bottle just fine an nothing was stuck anywhere.

That being said I will be ordering some of the Hornday dry lube and go over everything again. I just don't like leaving ultra clean metal exposed for very long.

I just set up everything after receiving it Thursday evening. The videos linked in this post are very good and they helped fill in the blanks during my test fit for everything.

I'm using Lee 3 die sets for rifle and I bought the Lee Factory Crimp dies also. Probably overkill but all 5 holes are full and the entire press ROCKS, in my novice opinion.

Shooting my first rounds tomorrow morning!
