Default Any Idea What This Is Really?

I got a box of "stuff" and this was in there. It says it's a Crandle powder measure. If anyone has any info on this or would like to be the proud owner let me know. TC

Default Looks to me

Looks to me like an ancient powder measure since that is what it says on the stamping. It appears to be cast iron. No plastic parts except maybe the handle. It may have been added later. Nothing like the good ol' days.

-----

Cast aluminum would make more sense than cast iron because of sparking and it does LOOK more like aluminum. And aluminum usage was increasing from the 1920s on so it's possible.

There were a lot of reloading machines and gizmos that popped up before the WWII and after in the 50's then it kind of settled down to the major players we know today minus a few. I can't find anything on Crandall but it appears to be cast aluminum ( is that correct ? ) and if so it is somewhat unusual for that time period. Of course aluminum is non-sparking and can be used with black powder. It also looks like it uses a sliding charge bar similar to the Star presses that are bored to pour a certain powder and quantity. I can't tell from the photo but perhaps the charge bar is adjustable which would make this perhaps a still usable powder measure ?

Interesting piece don't throw it out it can go in my antique reloading collection

I would not be surprised if this is the company that made this as they have been in the business of designing and building machinery for filling and metering products since the early 1900's

You may be able to find the patent, issued Feb 11, 1930. That should provide details.

From the pictures it looks similar to the all brass black powder dispenser sold by Shiloh Sharps for cartridges of very large charges. Ivan

Go to the Vintage handloading tool collectors forum. I have an ancient Ideal # 5 (the predecessor to the Lyman 55) made of cast iron that still works like a charm.

Looks like a sliding charge bar powder measure. The same principle as the Dillon measures (and others) use today. Move the handle to the right and a cavity in the bar is slid under the powder reservoir. Move the handle left and the cavity slides over to the dispensing nozzle.
