Default Power Pistol

Does this stuff burn hotter or otherwise help cause leading???

Maybe I've just been lucky but all my other loads from .38 special 105gr SWC tumble lubed powder puff loads of HP-38 to 158gr RNHP .357 magnums stoked to the gills with 2400 for some buckaroo bronco type loads and the BAC lube kept leading to minimal at worst.

I tried the Alliant load with Power Pistol and a 158gr bullet that's supposed to give a +P load for a bit over 1K fps (from a 6" barrel) and from my M&P 9c to my SP101 to my GP100 to my M19-5 to my M28-2 all have horrible leaded bores today.

I love the stuff and have no problems. It very well may burn hotter as it has more flash and boom and leaves a very whitish grey ash rather than the typical black sooty look.

May be your bullets are softer than mine?? Just a guess though.

I haven'nt seen any more propensity to lead with PP than any other medium powder. I have used the Alliant load in .38spl, as well as 7gr in .41spl, 8 8.5 and 9gr in .44spl. All with machine cast bulk beveled based bullets of full weight by caliber.

Some powders do burn hotter and some have a different pressure curve that may not cause the bullet to expand right a way to seal off the barrel from gasses. Leading can be caused by many things, especially bullet/barrel fit. If you are changing nothing but the powder then obviously the powder is at fault but if other things have changes you will have to eliminate them one at a time.

I have now cleaned all the bores of the guns used. It was a copper chore boy wrapped around the bronze brush type of cleaning and one was so bad I thought the brush was stuck. Switching to Power Pistol was the only change from either HP-38, Win 231, or 2400 depending on the load or gun used. I can run that same bullet with the same lube with a max load of 2400 or that same powder puff load of HP-38 and the same BAC and not get leading like that was.

My only somewhat logical conclusion is that PP needs a harder alloy of lead than I'm using and must not bump the lead to fill the lands and grooves the way the other powders do. So for any further use in my loads they will either be plated or jacketed and I don't do much of either.
