Default Replacement for an old standby

I used H450 for many years for various loads. I need and want to start loading 30.06 again with 165 GR BTSP and 150 GR BTSP. I'm being lead toward H4831-can anyone advise if you have a similar situation.

I have had very good results with H4350 for my bolt action 30-06 with 150-180 gr. bullets. I only use 4895 in my Garand though.

I'd lean faster than 4831 in the 30-06. My pick would be 4350, either type for everything, maybe 4895 with 150 grn bullets.

Ditto for the 4350 especially for the 165 Nosler Ballistic tips. 55.5 grains in a federal case, cci large rifle magnum primer it's good for 2800 fps by chronograph. Why the magnum primer?. Gives a better burn of the powder making it more efficient. Frank

It's my opinion 4831 is too slow a powder for the 30-06 especially with a 150gr bullet. Some of my friends think H4350 which I use in the 30-06 is too slow and that powder is faster than 4831. I don't think you will like the results with 4831 but 4350 is a fine powder for the 30-06, IMO of course...

That said, H4831 is in the burn rate range of H450 but just slightly faster. If you really liked the results you hot with H450 you just might like H4831 but I still think H4350 is a much better choice.

Welcome back to reloading...

I use a Sierra 165 grain SBT with 57.0 grains of IMR4350 with a CCI mag primer and WW case. 2,825 fps from my 22" barreled M70 and absolutely maximum load in my gun. You can also try IMR4064. Either IMR4831 or H4831 are too slow for the .30-06 except with 180 grain or heavier bullets and even then, it's marginal. May be ok in your particular gun but probably not.

The Sierra boattail & IMR4350 is 1 moa from my gun for 5 shots. IMR4350 has given uniformly excellent results in any .30-06 bolt action I've tried it in. Remember to reduce the 57 grain charge I mentioned by 10% and work up.

Another opinion for 4350. I use it in my .30-06 Springfield, .30-40 Krag, and .303 Enfield, and it gives eminently satisfactory results in all of them. Highly consistent, and consistency = accuracy.

I've used h-414 for decades in the 30-06. It meters well, burns clean, uses standard primers & will produce sub-moa groups with several different bullet weights.

4831 can be made to run in the 06, but best with 180-200gr bullets. If you want a ball pwoder, AA2520 works well with 150-165gr bullets. RL19 or one fo the 4350 is a good choice, as well as VV160 if you want to spend the $$.

imr 4350 will give higher pressures than the 4831 powders
and 55 grs of 4931 with a 165gr bullet makes for a great target round or one that will take deer with minimum meat damage.
I really think you will find out that 4831 H or imr will do very well in the old '06.

Not what you asked, but I've found no reason to try anything other than IMR 4350 in the 30-06 class of cartridges.

I finally got through to Hodgdon today (their phones were down) and had a very informative talk with the powder specialist. He is in agreement with the 4350 and this will be my choice if I can find some. Now the only problem is was it H4350 or IMR4350 as they supply both, I guess I'll call back tomorrow and get a clarification unless they are the same powder like H110/W296 or HP-38/W231. He also stated that H 4831 is best for 175gr bullets and higher. Thanks for the input, this is a really fine reloading forum. As a bonus I got a real good H4895/Garand clinic from the powder guy.

The two 4350 are NOT the same at all, close, but the data is not interchangeable. For me, I like H4350 a bit better, seems more uniform from lot to lot. I am sure IMR4350 will work better for someone else, there are few finite things about powder selection.
I made up a great elk load for my son's 06 using IMR4831 & 180gr NP. I get about 50fps more vel over 4350 w/ slighlty less pressures & terrific accuracy.

4350's 4831's 4895's and other like numbered rifle powders are definitely different powders and as above are not interchangeable.

I like the Reloader family of powders for the 30-06 and similar calibers.

I keep a good stock of RL15, RL19, and RL22 always on hand. They meter very well (much better than standard extruded powders) and deliver excellent accuracy. RL 19 is my "go to" powder for the 06'.

If you want to stick with a ball type powder, the W760/H414 works quite well too.

Dupont 4064 under a Sierra 165 or 185 grain BTSP gives excellent performance in my .30-06. Never failed on deer, caribou or moose.

Talked back to the powder man and he confirmed that we had discussed H4350 and that is going to be my choice to start over with. My initial use of H450 stemmed from the fact that my old LGS tended to recommend what he had on hand or had an overage of. The loads I ended up with were all sub MOA in 30.06 165 BTSP, 7MM Rem. Mag in 175 BTSP and .257 Weatherby Mag In 117 BTSP. I have shot Remington Factory loads for 17-18 years now with fine hunting results but cost and lack of availability will bring out my rifle dies along with my handgun stuff that got put back into service. Thanks for the help and I'll update if a good load is worked up.
