So today at the range, I was firing some BP hand loads and one of them failed to ignite the powder. The primer pushed the bullet into the forcing cone and jammed the gun up. I'm going to a gunsmith tomorrow to have him take a look at it and hopefully fix it. Anybody ever have something similar to this?

Assuming you are using lead bullets with your black powder loads, you may be able to use a wood dowel to tap the bullet back into the case enough to open the cylinder.

I agree, no need to take it straight to the gunsmith. Forcing the bullet back won't harm the barrel in the least when using a wooden dowel either.

Yep, had a primer only load when I first started reloading. The good news, I was shooting an auto. The slide didn't operate, which clued me in. Removed the barrel, pounded it out with a wooden dowel. Auto barrels make this much easier.

Had it with my 686 bullet moved into forcing cone locking the cylinder. Pushed it back with wooden dowel and made a mental note to myself

I routinely carry a range rod to my IDPA matches for just such a problem. We have to clear the revolvers before we let the shooter leave the range, since they are still loaded otherwise.

What kind of gum? A BP revolver? Just remove the cylinder and get a small oak dowel (depends on caliber) I keep a 1/4" one in my bag and hammer it out.

Is it a cap and ball gun or a a cartridge gun? Doesn't really matter, just curious as you said "primer"

I don't think you "Reload" cap and ball...........
since the cylinder "Is" the brass and you just add powder, ball and grease ............ or "Load" this type of firearm.

This is one weapon you "Don't" want to forget the powder, then seat a bullet in !! You will be very busy for a long, long time...................................

Hey guys! Well I did take it to the smith today and he knocked it out with a hammer and dowel free of charge do I'm happy the gun is a model 10 .38 special and it was using BP loads with Tula primers. I'm not sure if the powder ever ignited (I didn't bother disassembling the cartridge afterwords), but it was definitely stuck. I've been using some lead "cowboy" bullets, but tried a plated round. I had done it a few times before with no problem, but it didn't work this time. I'm not sure if that's the actual problem or not, but I won't be loading plated BP rounds anymore.

Forgot to charge one. The bullet normally get stuck in the forcing cone. Never done that more than a few times.

Yeah, I never did that once myself.

If you are using "Real" BP, be very careful since static electricity can set it off and it needs to be treated with kid gloves, so to speak.

The "New" type of powders are a lot safer and a lot more forgiving if you are using them...............

Out of curiosity, what manual gave BP data for a "Jacketed" bullet?

Sure ya do. Every time you shoot it. The OP did not give much information at first.Grease is a big pain and messy, use the coated wads.

If you do forget the powder remove the cylinder and pull out you handy Nipple wrench, un screw them and push the lead balls out. Yes, it takes a while especially if you do not take care of the Nipples

Another trick if you forget powder is remove the nipple and trickle powder in the hole then put the nipple back in and cap and fire it. Has worked for me.

I didn't know BP was recommended for use with jacketed bullets and why would you load BP under a jacketed bullet anyway? If you're going old school a lead bullet is the way to go...

Just a suggestion, when loading BP in a cartridge it's recommended you use a Magnum primer to insure proper and complete ignition of the powder. There will be those who swear they have used standard primers without a problem and I'm sure that's true but magnum primers with BP are just better. If your BP absorbed a little moisture it's possible the primer went off but didn't ignite the powder. A magnum primer would help.

A while back I got some WC ammo from a professional reloading firm. About 20% were squibs. I took them and a couple of my 38's and shot them for the brass. The primer would shove the bullet clear thru the barrel on my LCR. With the M10 4" the bullet would sometimes stop between the cylinder and the barrel or would barely make it into the barrel. I found that a hammer and a 5/16" wood dowel were my two best friends. I also decided that practicing fast double taps with known junk ammo would be a bad idea.
