Default Load data for Speer 180 gr and Unique

My lyman says for 165 gr TMJ, starting load is 5.4 with max 6.0 grains. It doesn't have data for 180 grain TMJ

I shoot 6.1 grains of unique for my 230 grain FMJ on my 45

Need some insight on the speer 180 TMJ for 40 S&W with unique

Alliant Powder - Reloader's Guide

The OAL may be different if yours is the RN non HP.

Yeah, I saw that for the HP. This is a FMJ flat point ( speer calls it a Total Metal Jacket). I'm wondering why the alliant charge is so high for the 40 cal. I don't run my 45 ACP that high with FMJ (6.1 gr)

OK, you are new so I will be kind

The Alliant data is a MAX load. Reduce by 10% to start.

The Speer manual #14 lists them both on the same page and the same powder loads. Actually the same OAL for the FN and the GDJHP. The are the same weight.

You can not compare the 40SW to the 45 ACP. The 40 is a much higher pressure round.

Also with the same calibers generally a heavier bullet requires less powder than a lighter one.

If you plan on using Speer bullets or Hornady or whatever get their manuals also.

Lyman is an excellent manual. More info is always a good thing.

Rule3 posted the Alliant web site.
Alliant Powder - Reloader's Guide

Here is the link to Hodgdon/Winchester/IMR.

Nosler:
Load Data ? Nosler

Speer only offers free updates that have been published since their latest manual:
Speer Bullets - Reloading Data

Similarly, Hornady:
Load Data - Hornady Manufacturing, Inc

I trust the data as these are manufacturer's web sites. The data is sometimes limited but this may enable you to find reliable recipes.

Also, there is nothing wrong with purchasing used manuals from auction sites.

Thank you everyone. I own the lyman 49. Doesn't give data for this bullet. The TMJ.

I have Nosler. Doesn't list my powder.

In own the hornady. Doesn't list my powder.

I know that unique has application in the 40 S&W. so I have manuals, just not the Speer.

And thank you for the info of the 45 compared to the 40. I am new to reloading. Got to start somewhere.

Found my Speer #14. I broke down and bought it when I found out how much my 5906 likes GDHP!

P/N 4402 180 TMJ FN:

OAL = 1.120

Start Unique 6.0 = 849 fps.
Max Unique 6.7 = 1000 fps.

A guy can go broke buying manuals, can't he?!

Default 40 S&W in 10mm

Damn this thread is old.
My goal is to use a hot 40sw for my 10mm Colt Delta.
I've decided to use Unique and load 6gr or 6.2/6.3, Somewhere close to 6gr.
I use a RCBS Little Dandy measure and I just love it, it's 30 years old. For the life of me I can't get a bushing to drop 6gr or a little over 6. Tried a #11, #12. Just ordered a #13 hoping to get 6gr+ one or two tenths over. Bushings for lighter drops of BE and other powders seem to be right on as indicated by the chart.

It would appear that their designation of TMJ is basically a plated bullet vs. a Full Metal Jacket...

Just a FYI.

Cheers!
