hello gunners
im looking to cast some bullets
for my m&p sw 40 cal
what type of metal should i order
is #2 alloy correct?
whats the deal with the bullet shortage a year ago i could go to
walmart and get whatever i want now the shelfs are bare

I hope some more knowledgeable folks will chime in, as I haven't got a clue about .40 S&W

Always heard that it can be a bit finicky about several things, but I don't own one in that caliber.
Don't hear a whole lot about fellers reloading .40 as much as other calibers.

#2 is a good place to start. Keep velocity moderate, and choose a good lube. You should have no trouble w/leading.

#2 should be fine or maybe something a bit softer (I don't have my manual it front of me) like 20-1 lead-tin. You don't want to go too hard as the bullet needs to obturate to fill the bore...

I use straight wheel weight alloy and have never had a problem with leading.

would 175gr eject better because of weight
i can get bullets this casting thing is more of a hobby
hell in the future it might be a good trade to know


also approx how many bullets would you get from ingots
say lyman #2 alloy

The shootings at Sandy Hook prompted cries for more gun controls and anything to do with shooting was bought up. There has been only a trickle of ammo and ALL reloading supplies and what little there is gets bought up quick. Some things are improving a little, like primers.

Ejecting spent cases has more to do with powder charges than bullet weight. As far as number of bullets per lb. of lead, there are 7,000 grains per pound so you'll have to divide the bullet weight into 7k, allow for sprues, spills, mebbe 10% and that should get you close...

But then again, I flunked math in high school...
