.44 Special handloads with AA #5 / #7
Hi,
I don't know if this question has been asked a thousand times, but search didn't help me to come to a conclusion. I would like to replace VV powders for my proven 44 special loads of 7 grs VV N340 with a 255 gr cast SWC / 9 gres VV N340 with a 200 grs cast SWC because of production stop of VV next year. I tried some other propellants, but did not reach the same level of accuracy with flake powders, so I want to try ball powders. There are some good hints to use AA #5, but AA loading manual shows only velocities of not more than 950 fps for the 200 grs and 860 for the 240 grs bullets. Would it be appropriate to use #7 for loads that reach about 950 fps with 240-250 grs bullets? Something like the Skeeter load with #7 instead of Unique? I don't like flake powders...
best regards from Germany
Ulrich

Accurate Arms Data Manual #1
44 Special 7-1/2" barrel
200 gr LSWC
#5 7.4 gr @ 959 fps max load, start load 6.4 gr @ 876 fps
#7 9.5 gr @ 992 fps max load, start load 8.6 gr @ 873 fps
250 gr LSWC
#5 7.0 gr @ 864 fps max load, start load 6.3 gr @ 760 fps
#7 9.0 gr @ 885 fps max load, start load 8.1 gr @ 779 fps
EDIT: This data is from a manual that is 10 years old at least. The 44 mag data can be potent. I don't load 44 Spl, but I have put MAX 44 SPL loads in a 44 mag case and the loads were pleasant to shoot compared to the 44 mag data. I'm offering information directly from the manual, nothing else.
I will say that AA2230 load data (FROM THIS MANUAL) for .223 Rem / 5.56 NATO is HOT when approaching max charges.

daimler1989,
NAMMO, the parent company of Lapua is in the process of purchasing the Finland VV plant.
They are in the DUE DILIGENCE phase of the process.

@Moonman
thanks for this info, hope they will settle their deal pretty soon to prevent me to switch over to other brands
@Engineer1911
thanks, seems as if #5 and #7 don't push the envelope too far in .44 Special. Or is AA very conservative with their loading data?
regards
Ulrich

Daimler1989,
I hope so too, I LOVE VV pistol powders,
I don't shoot rifles generally.

I use both #5 & #7 along with #9 all are good powders, In my opinion I think Accurate is conservative in there load data. That being said you are starting with a new powder so you have to work up your load to where you want it and are getting the results you want all the while looking for signs of problems. I load #9 in my Ruger Blackhawk 44 Mag with good results. These powders you meter well and are pretty clean burning.

Daimler, you might look into AA 9. Check in the AA manual #2 pg. 131. That shows loads over 950 fps. with a 200 gr. SWC.
