Default In praise of my 650

Yesterday I decided to go shooting but didn't have any .38 ammo. 6 1/2 minutes later I had 100 SWC's ready to go. I've never timed my reloading before and was quite pleased. I was going at a normal pace.
I've had the 650 for about 6 yrs now and am still impressed.

Jeff

BUT, your 650 was set up for 38 Spl. How long would it take if you had to change from 45 ACP to 38 Spl??

Two Dillon 550s, one large primer, one small primer is really slick for quick batches.

Yeah Jeff, they really do a nice job. Quicker to load up 100 rounds of ammo than it is to run to the Quickie-Mart and get a gallon of milk.

Just used my Dillon 650 for the first time last night. Cranked out 100 38 Specials in just over 6 minutes as well. I am not new to reloading, but I had a Dillon SD-B for 30 years. It was a faithful and reliable press but at best could crank out 350 - 400 per hour. Nothing wrong with that, but I shoot a LOT and am not real happy reloading for days on end. This new 650 is not only quick, but the quality of the reloads is top notch, and the press is effortless to operate. I think the 650 is Dillon's best for a non pro reloader. I never cared for the manual indexing of the 550, but believe it or not it is Dillon's top seller. Anyone interested in a press these days should really look into the 650 - way to go IMHO.

I bought my 650xl back when they started selling them. Best thing I ever did. Today I called dillon because my case meda separator tub got cracked due to me letting it sit for a few years on something and not flat. Guess what a new one is on the way free of charge. No shipping, nothing. The no bs guarantee is real.

I'm well on the way to becoming heavily invested in my 650 as well. It just flat works well and that as well as the involved caliber conversion procedure has motivated me to order extra "quick-change" toolheads with powder measures and low powder charge alarms for each caliber I load. So far, I have them for .38 Super, .45ACP and .44 Magnum.

I also plan to order them for my .38 Special wadcutter and .357 Magnum semi-wadcutter loads but might put RCBS-type die lock rings on my .38/.357 dies so I can remove and reinstall them without changing their adjustment. Then I could place the magnum spacers RCBS includes with their multi-caliber dies (38/357, 44SPL/44MAG) under the bullet seating and crimping dies when I load magnums. Since case mouth expansion is done with the powder measure, I would need a measure for each. But that's only if I wanted to make changeover as painless as possible. I don't know that it is all that bothersome.
