Default 125 gr Berrys and a 15-2

I could only find the 125 gr Berry's plated fodder for my 4" 15-2 plink-o-matic.
I'll start rolling these out this weekend but I was looking for something that will shoot close to POA. I've shot a bunch of 158 grain Winchester white box through the little guy and that stuff is right on the money.
I will need to slow down the 125s to raise the POI but can't stick 'em in the bore.
My manual says 4.5 gr of Bullseye is a do not reduce load that will be moving a bit briskly.

Obviously, H110 is right out.

What about stuffing a pile of Trail Boss in there? It looks like mid 4s would do the trick. I've got several pounds of that stuff under my bench.

Anybody use a load like this?

Berry's are nice just bought a bunch myself. Their website says not to go over 1250 fps so be careful.

I have zero experience with Trailboss, I have shot lots of reloads with a 125 grain bullet with 4.5 gains of BE and found them to be on target.

My model 14 loves a 125 grain JHP with 4.5 grains of BE. It is a very accurate load.

I keep wishing for a 140 grain plated bullet for the 38 as an economical plinking load.

I will try the Berrys or the Rainier 125 grain when my current supply runs out.

Trail Boss is a great powder for lead bullets , don't know how it will work with plated bullets but it might work out with those light weight 125gr bullets, just have not ever loaded "Jacket" bullets with TB.

I have shot lots of 125gr lead out of my J frame snub nose
with Trail Boss. With a cci500 and light crimp I got:

3.0 at 543 fps
3.5 at 597 fps
3.7 at 676 fps.

3.2 Hvy crimp at 626 fps.

Bullseye powder
3.2 at 627 fps
3.5 at 695 fps
4.0 max (no fps) but 5 @ 1.25" at ten feet off bags.

Maybe someone will chime in with Jacket data for you.

Having shot a ton of Berrys, here's a couple of comments and precautions.

Berry cautions to load the 125gr to 800fps for a reason. A too-light plated load will stick in the bore, and 125gr needs MORE powder than the 158gr for a safe load. I just bought another 4000 of the 158gr Berry round nose, which I load to PF 120+ with HP38.

The weight of the bullet has far more to do with the POI than the bullet speed, so your attempt to raise the POI by going light is not going to work as well as using a 158gr bullet. True, the bullet will go slower through the barrel, but the force rotating the gun upward will also be less, so the POI will still be low.

The model 15 has adjustable sights for a reason. Just wirte down how much you have to adjust for the lighter bullet, and you can adjust back for the 158gr whenever you want. For shooting 25 and 50yd outdoor bullseye and PPC, I have charts for sight adjustments for my model 14. A few clicks up or down is no big deal to do.

OKFCO5 has it right. You need to adjust your sights for the lighter bullet.

Read my posting concerning SR7625 and it's position sensitivity. This is a load that could range between 400 and 700 fps. depending on which direction the barrel was pointed immediately before firing. Yet with all those wild velocity swings I did NOT see any noticeable shift in the Point of Impact relative to the sights. I also didn't seen any shift with a much more vigorous load featuring 5.7 grains of Unique at 850 fps from my 4 inch 67-1.

What I am saying is that you won't be able to use velocity to shift the POI of your bullets because as you decrease velocity you also decrease recoil. As a result the POI remains totally consistent until you approach the point where the bullet is just barely making it out of the barrel and I mean that literally. BTW, I had the 67 sighted in at 15 yards and by cheating with reading glasses was able to put those SR7625 loads into one single 1/2 diameter inch hole from a rest. So, even with velocity who knows where there wasn't any deviation in the POI.

I really wish that I had found a solution for SR7625 because I like it a lot in my 40 S&W and 45 ACP because it meters wonderfully, burns clean, and I have a lot of it. However, for 38 spl. I'll be loading with Flaming Dirt (Unique) until I can purchase a few more pounds of Accurate #5.

While reading this thread I was thinking the same thing. This is why there are adjustable sights on your revolver, no?
