Default Taper crimp or roll crimp for 45acp in 625

I reload 45acp for my 1911, I'm picking up a 625JM and would
also like to reload for it most of the loads well be with
200swc and B.E. So can I use my Lee 4 die set with the taper
crimp or should I pick up a new die for rolled crimp??
Thanks

If you don't use moon clips, the taper crimp would be best, since the round head spaces on the case mouth. If your going to use moon clips it doesn't matter if the round is taper or roll crimped.

I use the taper crimp with all my loads for the 625, with no troubles. I also believe it is easier on the brass.

I've tried both; may be a slight accuracy edge with the taper crimp. Greater case longevity with taper crimp? - jackpearl may be right; my results have been inconclusive.

Your taper crimp will be fine, especially as most projectiles intended for the .45 Auto don't have a crimp groove (cannelure). I use a taper crimp for all of my .45 ACP and .45 AR loads intended for my revolvers. Recoil of the typical .45 Auto load in my 625's is not enough to worry about bullets jumping their crimp.

If you decide to load bullets designed for .45 revolvers, they typically incorporate a crimping groove. In that case, a roll crimp may be used if desired.

I have shot only .45 Auto Rim in my 625 (4 & 5 inch) and roll crimp them all. Brass is on it's 10th+ loading, none less, with no losses. I 'may' have shot 5 or 6 cylinder loads of ACP from each gun using full moon clips back in 1992/3 when first purchasing the gun new from Gil Hebard for $395.00. (1992 a 4" 625 cost $279.00 from the Birmingham Pistol Parlor) .45ACP ammo is always taper crimped as there are 9 different 1911's and a couple Glocks in .45ACP.

Load them EXACTLY the same as for your 1911.

The only time to consider roll crimp is with extra heavy loads using bullets in the 250 gr. range and heavier.

45ACP is taper crimped at the factory for most stock loads and always has been. 45 Auto Rim is also taper crimped in manufacture. There is very little reason to even consider roll crimping.

Unless your rounds suffer bullet jump, there is no need to roll crimp at all.

Have found through actually testing that a roll crimp into a full power 230 jhp in rem cases significantly improves the accuracy and consistency of the loads fired in a 45 ar S&W 625 Mt gun. The bullets had cannelures placed with Corbin's tool.

This was with the then current versions of Speer 230gdhp, Hdy 230 xtp and Sierra's 230 jhp.

Roll crimping 200 lrnfps with charges of some faster powders also shows improvement over taper crimped rounds with same bullet loaded for 45 acp auto.

not internet surmising

I have loaded the 255 gr. SWC to 960 FPS in a 4" barrel using the taper crimp and the bullets do not jump the crimp.

Way back when I first started loading .45 ACP my Hornady die set came with a roll crimp seating die. I loaded thousands of soft swaged bullets with the roll crimp and that too worked just fine. Swaged bullets are soft enough that you can roll crimp them anywhere you want and not have to rely on a crimp groove.

....or if they're loaded in a lightweight gun, like a Night Guard.
