Default Price for .38spl casings?

I have been saving all my brass since I started shooting revolver because I knew a.)I would reload someday, or b.)What is the sense of letting the gun range profit off of selling the stuff, or making their own reloads when I can sell it off myself?

Do people by others' used brass? What is the going rate for .38spl? Is it per round? Per pound? It is first fired, never reloaded stuff. I'm sitting on about 1200 rounds right now.

Thanks

Generally it is per casing. Think the last I've seen around $0.06/ea lately.

I've bought used brass, especially if it's something not easily found like 32-20 or 38-55. 38 special is pretty common. Bought a 5 gallon bucket of it this summer for $10 at a yard sale. About 50 pounds mixed used brass. I've cleaned them up, deprimed and resized them but haven't been able to sell any yet. At the very least it's worth from $1 to $1.50 /lb as scrap brass. At most gun shows and shops you can find a lot of it priced anywhere from $2 to $10 for a box of 50 empties.

I'm in the market for more .38 Special brass (used) and I'm finding the prices all over the map. Roughly they're averaging $10 per 100 for lower quantities. Higher quantities like 1k+ is around $5 per 100.

I'd say that's about right.

Anyone who thinks .38 Special brass is readily available needs to do some shopping. NONE of the online stores have any or if they do, it is a brand no one wants or range pickups that have been reloaded an unknown amount of times and/or with imported primers that stretched the primer pockets so domestic primers will fall out. Fortunately, I don't need any but I did just buy a package deal consisting of 370+ pieces of new and 250 pieces of once-fired, resized and tumbled clean pieces of Remington .38 Special brass for $73 shipped to me.

These days, when brass is so hard to keep in stock, it is feasible to buy loaded ammo and have a load to shoot while obtaining the brass for reloading. Fiocchi .38 Special wadcutter ammo, when available, can be bought for $20 per box of 50 rounds and Remington wadcutter loads run about $25 per 50. Both brands of brass are very reloadable and have standard-size primer pockets.

Check Cheyenne Brass. They sell in bulk. $61.00 per 1,000 cases once fired, cheaper if you buy more.

The .06 is about right for once fired, but for multi-fired brass .04 is more like it. If you ever want to start reloading save at least 600 rounds for yourself. Calculate how much you save on reloaded ammo, and if you shoot more than about 50-75 rounds a month you will save money (in the long run) by reloading. Especially if you can pick up a used press and accessories at a garage sale or auction.

A few months ago , I walked out of my LGS with 12 50rd boxes of once-fired Federal nickeled .38 Special brass for $10. They were marked $1 , but when I handed the shop owner a $20 bill , he handed back a ten-spot!

I have no idea how to tell once-fired from twice-or-thrice-or-more-fired brass unless I loaded it myself and counted how many times I loaded it, and to tell you the truth, I don't count.

*EDIT* I'm willing to bet that 90+% of range brass is only once fired. Any reloader worth his salt is going to pick his up. Brass left laying around is from those who have not seen the light!

In my opinion, there is absolutely no reason not to use range brass to reload - especially the low pressure .38 Special. I sell a little brass now and then to bankroll component purchases. I get $0.05 per round for 9mm or 40 S&W in 400 piece lots (shipping included) but if I ever let go of my .38 brass, I would charge maybe $0.07 per round.

If you're looking to sell your brass, find out how much you can stuff in a small flat rate box. Make it an easy number like 300 or 350 or 400. I'm thinking you can get 350 in a box. You could charge $24.50, round it down to $24.00. It'll cost you $5.80 to ship, you profit $18.20 and your buyer gets a square deal.
Baggie the brass before you put it in the box, especially since you won't be tumbling it. Maybe not a problem but I worry about Gremlins detecting the odor of powder, you know what I mean?

A quick Google search shows Amazon dealers selling Range brass in 38 Special going for $48/500 shipped. That's $0.09.6 per round. But it's tumbled and polished. Other places are about the same or higher.

*EDIT* Another reason to reload. I make my own ammunition the almost the same cost as most people charge for used brass. Crazy...

It was easy in these cases because the all primers still had the red sealant. Far too neat and even to have been done by hand.

I just recently purchased 1500 38 spl brass casings, mixed - $74.00 shipped - this was from a fellow on another board who had some to sell. I added 3% on as I paid through PayPal - he was kind enough to include an additional 200 nickel casings. I'm seeing it anywhere from 6 to 8 cents a casing generally. I did purchase some new Starline brass casings - 500 ran $75.00 - that was new brass.
