Default 9mm bullet shapes

I noticed that there are slight differences in the tip angle and shape on many of the FMJ/plated designs.......but they almost always feed without jams.........unlike the JHP bullets.

A JHP design is a new can of worms..............
I did most of my shooting 20 years ago with the 9mm and shot the Hornady, Speer and Sierra bullets and had my share of problems finding a load and oal that work in my pistol. Not even making it past the ramp to the barrel, really ticked me off ! Any way.............

So now today with the new designs and improvements with the 115 and 124gr JHP that are out there..........is there any brand that feeds and works best for any of you?
It is a shame that Federal does not sell its HST but there is till the three old standard companies.......
I never loaded win/rem. or any new comers of todays lines.

Looking for a little info for when I finish most of my plated bullets and move to the higher priced bullets.
Thanks.

What kind of pistol? Quite frankly, after the "good old days" of keeping 1911s and High Powers happy, the greatest challenge with the current M&P semi-autos is finding something they WON"T shoot.

I'm a fan of Speer gold dots in the premium bullets, but just load Precision Delta for range work. Totally boring reliable.

The old 9 was a Radom and it hated 115gr Hornady Jhp............
sort of got a hich in its getalong with the 124gr Jhp Sierra's now and then, also.

New gun is a Springfied XD and a new ball game.
We have no idea on what is going to happen ii the days ahead with ten test loads of 115 and 124gr FMJ's.

Ed,

FWIW, I've had good luck with various rounds feeding in both of my XD9 pistols, a full sized and a sub-compact. I carry 124 gr Golden Sabers in two of my carry 9s, the XD9sc and a Kahr PM9.

Default BULLET SHAPES?

The only 9mm's I've loaded for were a sig 226 & a kahr pm9 but never had ANY issues with any type of bullet & have used several from cheap bulk solids to expensive jhp's. Maybe it's the crimp or OAL? What I do for semi's is the first round is for testing, no primer or powder. disassemble the pistol & put the round in the breach end of the bbl, if it sits flush I have no problems, if it's too far out/in, it needs a seating/crimp tweak.

Default Zero

I have found that the Zero 115 grain JHP feeds very well in all my autos.

Those have not been available so I ordered some Rainier 115 JHP's to use instead.

While shooting the Rainiers in an EMP I was getting failures to feed due to the large hollowpoint hanging up.

They work great in the other autos but I still prefer the Zero as it is a small hp with a trunucated design, rather than a long rounded ogive.

Powder Valley had some Zero FPFMJ 125 grain bullets available.

I ran some through the EMP and they worked without any problems.

Keep checking Zero/Roze distribution and Powder Valley if you want to give them a try.

I have stayed away from the "New" Remington GS design....

I am not sure about that larger back section of the bullet and then the taper going forward on the rest of the bullet..........
Is that made for a crimp area? (no crimp band)
I wondered if that would bulge the case and make the taper harder or over work the brass?

You never hear about it around here in the shooting spots...
so I did not try them.

Any close up pictures out there of a loaded round with the bullet
near 1.12 oal ?

If you haven't been loading much 9mm, here's a suggestion: Use a taper crimp and only crimp from taking the bell out to .003". Don't expect to have a crimp cannelure, and don't crimp the dickens out of it. The case tension holds a 9mm, not the crimp. Especially with plated bullets, overcrimping is just trouble. You're not crimping a .357 revolver load.

Taper is good...........

Most jacket bullets allow you to adjust to any oal with their "same" outside dia. ........

The shape of the Remington looks like it is limited to it oal by the base of the bullet...........am I wrong ?
Can 50% of this bullet be inside of a 9mm case without any
taper problems etc. ?

It just looks different..................
