Default 9mm plated RN

Was going over my numbers, data and loads today, just to kill some time..........
Plated OAL with a few companies call for 1.14" with the 115gr and the 124 RN runs around 1.16".

I measured the maximum oal of 1.169" with the .59" length 124 RN and found out that the bullet sat inside the case at 29% of its total length.

I then took the 115gr RN and set it at 1.14" oal and did a little math. Guess what figure popped up? Its a tuff question, I know, but we just got to do these things to clear the air, to make things safe.

BINGO !! base of bullet seated into the case was.........
29%

Some of the factory "FMJ" type loads have 33 to 37% of the bullet seated inside the case and some even add a sealer!

OK, it is time for recess...go play.

I seat all mine @ 1.100 wether its FMJ or plated. never an issue. only time i ever seat at a longer OAL is if im running a really hot load to reduce case pressure. havent kaboomed yet. the newer plated bullets (RMR, Extreme, Powerebond) are double plated which allow for higher FPS. As far as your % goes, see what a HP sits at. My 115g hollowpoints seem to sit very shallow in the case.

JW;
I have yet to load any JHP bullets of ANY kind..........
I know some data calls for 1.09 and a little more but then they have their nose cut off, so I can see why the shorter oal.

Hodgdon and VV have a slight difference 1.142"......... but many do not use the same bullet !! XTP, Sierra, GDots..........

You need the total length of a bullet to help with the oal and no one list the length of the bullet except maybe Nosler.
The plunk test and the minimum oal are nice to know but some times not going to happen with some data.

Maybe Jhp later, right now just target loads.
