Default 358429 & Unique in a .38 SPL

I seem to recall loading some Lyman 358429's w/Unique in 38 SPL, but for the life of me I can't find the source of the data. IIRC it was a max of 5.0 gr (+P). I think I found it in one of my older Lyman manuals that I have since hidden from myself Can anyone help me out?

David R-

Thanks for the quick response time, I was almost certain of that load, but wanted to be sure. Thanks again

I think Keiths load in .38 spcl cases and the #358429 slug was 5.2 grains. Then again....He mostly shot big N frames and liked to load HOT.

I loaded thousands of them with 5.0 Of UNIQUE for many years.

I also got superb results with that load in my Blackhawk and my Model 13. Highly recommend this load.

Yep, 5.0 of Unique is good. It was a max standard pressure load in several manuals. In Lyman 49 Max got lowered to 4.2....but my guns are still quite happy with the older proven data.

Depending on the dies this bullet can be from 168 to 173 grs and will work in the 38 spl., 38/44 and .357 magnum.
Due to the weight it does best in a "Heavy frame" revolver and due to it's length it may need to be crimped over the forward driving band in some 357 revolvers.

My father used 14.0 grs of 2400 in the magnum case and in a magnum revolver, a 38 case with 11.5grs of 2400 for a light target load.......... but you will need to reduce and work up if you try these loads.

Sorry, I can't help you with any Unique powder loads........
back in those days it was pretty much 80% or more loads.
Very few shot "Target loads".

its in Lyman 45th

from the book:
test gun was a Model 14, 6"
Remington 1 1/2 primer

168 grain cast
bullet #358429 (#2 alloy)
Unique sug. starting grains 3.0 / 585 fps
max grains 5.0 / 913 fps

it does not say (+P)
and is not designated as a compressed charge

IIRC he shot these in .357 magnum revolvers because if loaded in magnum brass they're too long for S&W cylinders

Tried Unique this last weekend with some 45LC and the metering was so inconsistent. Had to weigh each round. Next time will try polishing the powder drop.
