I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this question already but figured I'd throw it out there.
Was looking for some 250-300g 45 colt JHP to reload for my Ruger Blackhawk. Not having much luck until I looked at BassPro, or so I thought. They had listed under 45 colt some 230g XTP and the picture showed a cannelure on the bullets. Free shipping looked good so I ordered 500. A couple days later I figured I'd look up the loading data in the Hornady manual and they weren't listed so I went to their website and found the only 230g 45 they make is for the 45 ACP and is .451 dia. instead of .452 dia. with no cannelure. The bullets had already been shipped and BassPro does not take returns on bullets.
My question is would these be able to be reloaded using 45 colt brass and dies? I'm pretty sure a roll crimp wouldn't work and there is no load data. Am I probably best off to resell them?

Check the Lee 2nd Edition, in there you will find load data for the 230 grain XTP in the 45 Colt. The powder selection is a bit limited but if you have Blue Dot, Accurate #5, Unique, Herco, Bullseye, or Power Pistol you'll have data you can use.

As for function, a .451 diameter isn't ideal but I suspect those bullets will actually mic at 0.4513 which is what my 185 grain XTP's measure. End result is you might lose a bit of accuracy but I suspect it would take a very good shooter to determine that.

Crimp. It's been my experience that the XTP's have a pretty good jacket, so I wouldn't be the least bit hesitant to use a moderate roll crimp on them.

You'll have to use a taper crimp because, as you said, they don't have cannelures. I've loaded these bullets, just for grins, in 45 Colt & 454 Casull cases with a taper crimp at moderate 45 Colt levels in my SRH without bullet jump. Unless you try to load them +P/Ruger only, you should be okay since it's not a light weight gun. (Hot loads in my 325NG & ACP bullets experience bullet jump because of the lack of a cannelure & recoil from the light gun).

Any 225gr. load data would get you in the ballpark too. Also, if your RBH has tight throats, like I've read some have, the .451" bullets might be a good match (my SRH has loose throats).

Thanks. That's good info. I have an RCBS carbide dieset which I think will only do a roll crimp. Do I need a different seater/crimp die to do a tapered crimp?

Yes. This won't help you, but I have the Lee 4 die FactoryCrimpDie set in 45ACP & 45 Colt & I exchange parts when I need the other die's crimp.

Before I started doing this, I saw that Lee had an individual/single die labelled "Taper Crimp Die, 45 Colt/454 Casull, PN# 90786. I bought it so I could put a taper crimp on my light load 45 Colts using bullets w/o a cannelure. The die does not have a smooth even taper, like you'd expect, but rather has a sharp turn-in that puts a roll crimp on the case!? Just a heads up on this one in case they didn't address that. You'd be fine with a taper crimp only die & just use your existing die for seating only.

I would call Bass-Pro and show them that the error was on their part...not yours. Odds are in that case, they will take the bullets back or give you credit. I had a similar thing happen to me a few years back with Gamaliel Shooting Supply. I had suspicions that what they had shown on their website was in error so I called and asked and was assured what was on the website was correct. Ordered the bullets and sure enough, my suspicions were correct and they were wrong. I got the "we take no returns on bullets" from them too until I proved it was their error and not mine. They asked if I wanted a partial credit and keep the bullets or if I wanted to send 'em all back for a complete credit. I took the latter and the next day UPS showed up and took 'em back on their dime.

Thanks for providing me with a lot of options, that's one of the reasons for membership in this forum. I pulled the Lee 2nd Ed. and sure enough they have the loading data. Also found a couple taper crimp dies online now I just need to find me some Blue Dot but I think the gun club I belong to still has some. I usually use 2400 and 231 but I see Blue Dot listed for some calibers I reload with good accuracies. Should make some good target loads.
