Default Coated lead bullets

Anybody have experience loading the Bayou coated bullets?
Looking to load .38 158gr SWC and .45 230gr RN. Hoping to get less leading and cleaner guns.

I Cast and Coat my own,

I got my supplies from Donnie at Bayou Bullets,

I like the GOLD, and have done Both 38 Special and 45ACP.

I have an ORDER from SNS CASTING due Monday with GOLD COATING

on 9MM 124 Grain projectiles from A NEW MOLD WITH NO LUBE GROOVES.

Lube grooves are NOT NEEDED with this coating.

I experience CLEAN BARRELS and NO LEADING.

***** Your Bullets still need to "FIT YOUR BARRELS". ****

HI-TEK COATINGS are available from BAYOU BULLETS, SNS CASTING, GATEWAY BULLETS or NOW from BLACK BULLETS INTERNATIONAL.

I'm sure OTHER COMMERCIAL CASTERS WILL BE JOINING THEM.

Accurate Molds has some NO LUBE GROOVES MOLDS AVAILABLE, and NOE (Night Owl Enterprises)

has just introduced a 45 mold, these are for the DO IT YOURSELF CROWD.

You will need A DEDICATED CONVECTION OVEN with good temp control if you coat your own.

Take your choice, COMMERCIAL or COAT YOUR OWN.

I tried 500 of the .45 200gr SWC coated bullets from SNS. I was initially a little skeptical but I'm now a believer. Shot them through 3 different 1911s and 2 M&P .45s. They shot great and no signs of leading in any of the guns. Less smoke than an un-coated lead bullet. I also noticed the slight smell of burnt plastic while shooting them. I like em and will be ordering more.

The real question you should be asking is why you haven't ordered any yet? They're fantastic.

The coating COMPLETELY ENCAPSULATES the lead.

I've fired Bayou coated bullets and Precision "black bullets" in my 45 ACPs and 9mms. Nothing really to report; no leading, no fouling, no lube, normal accuracy...

I've shot lots of them through different guns, 9mm, including a carbine, they flat work, the price is great also.

Anybody know what the coating is? I've been told it's a powder coating process. I now have a excuse to shoot more. Got to burn up the hard cast and plated bullets I have so I can try coated bullets.

dickttx,

ANYTIME, you change a COMPONENT with HANDLOADED ammunition you should step back a little and WORK UP YOUR LOAD AGAIN.

Many people are TESTING, this HI-TEK coating materials, it was DEVELOPED for HANDGUNS,

In AUSTRALIA but many in the USA are trying RIFLE LOADING.

Some people have found the projectiles TO BE REALLY SLIPPERY.

Different Catalysts can affect THE COAT YOUR OWN PEOPLE.

The manufacturer found out doing some development that he COULD MAKE THE MIXTURE TOO SLIPPERY TO GRAB THE RIFLING WELL.

He took a little step back from there.

There are DIFFERENT COLORS, with DIFFERENT MATERIAL CONTENT. (coat your own have a choice)

Production Casters I don't think give a choice, Bayou Bullets uses THE GREEN,

SNS CASTING uses THE GOLD, and I don't know what the others are using for sure.

Commercial Casters I'm sure have mixtures that suit THEIR HIGHER PRODUCTION RATES.

The USA HI-TEK is in a 2 PART (COLOR/CATALYST MIX) and you add your own ACETONE, and BAKE your castings (do it yourselves).

COMMERCIAL CASTERS ARE SUPPLYING FINISHED PROJECTILES.

One thing though, SHIPPING your lead projectiles WON'T DAMAGE THIS LUBE.

**** NOTE! *******

The AUSTRALIAN MANUFACTURER is developing a DRY MIXTURE with the COLOR/CATALYST together for SAFER SHIPPING PURPOSES.

It would make the MIXING RATIO PROCESS EASIER, you still would need to add your own ACETONE and BAKE your projectiles.

AUSTRALIAN and USA Production Casting companies are currently evaluating these mixtures along with SELECTIVE SHOOTERS.

This DRY COATING HI-TEK coating mixture SHOULD NOT BE CONFUSED with the current ELECTROSTATIC POWDER

COATING METHODS being tested in the USA and other places.

Collo Rosso,

HI-TEK IS NOT A POWDER COATING PROCESS.

It is a LIQUID POLYMER COATING. (for DO-IT-YOURSELF)

You can purchase the finished bullets though from some commercial casters.

There are people POWDER COATING PROJECTILES with Harbor Freight

type ELECTROSTATIC GUNS and Harbor Freight POWDER COATINGS.

Powder coating is a dry polymer coating. It's heated so the dry film goes liquid and flows evenly. The idea behind it was no nasty drying agents like acetone evaporating. Not much info on Hi-TEK but it looks to be polymer based also and can be applied wet (with acetone as a drying agent) or dry by tumbling as a powder. Both methods require heat to cure the coating.
I did some price research and price wise it's $2/50 more for 45acp, hard cast vs coated bullets. That's a pretty good jump in price.

I've been experimenting with powder coating for a few weeks. I dry tumble and bake. So far, so good. Different powders give different results, even from the same vendor. Harbor freight red powder when tumbled, coating works pretty good but their black is spotty, clumpy...

I've been following the "Coatings and Alternatives" section over at Castboolits.com for several months. Hundreds of posts on methods, tools and equipment, and results...

Collo Rosso,

COSTS AS FOLLOWS,

I just looked at PENN Bullets a long time and respected cast manufacturer.

PENN 45 ACP 230 Grain RN $95/1000. (Standard lube)+Shipping.

Missouri Bullets, also a highly respected caster, 45 ACP 230 Grain RN $92/1000 (Standard Lube) + Shipping.

Now (HI-TEK PROCESS) COATED BULLETS.

SNS CASTING 45 ACP 230 Grain RN (HI-TEK coated GOLD) $105/1000. + Shipping.

Bayou Bullets 45 ACP 230 Grain RN (Hi-TEC coated GREEN) $110/1000. + Shipping.

Black Bullets International 45 ACP (Hi-Tek coated BLACK) $122/1000 (SHIPPING INCLUDED.)

Gateway Bullets 45 ACP 230 Grain RN $122/1000 + Shipping.

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO COAT YOUR OWN WITH HI-TEK COATINGS IT'S ABOUT $68 A LITER/with Catalyst + SHIPPING.
THAT'S ENOUGH TO COAT THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF PROJECTILES.

MOONMAN

I think you missed my point. Weather powder coating a steel office desk or tumbling a load of bullets in liquid HI-TEK in a coffee can you are applying a polymer.
I did the math using 230gr. 45acp bullets at 500 count from who I use now and coated from Bayou bullets. The coated added $2 per 50 loaded.

I just received 500 HI-TEK "GOLD" coated 9MM

125 Grain RN Projectiles from SNS CASTING.

These are from their new NO LUBE GROOVE MOLD.

$42.45 INCLUDING SHIPPING.

They look REALLY GOOD.

9 MM dies are due tomorrow.

Default This sounds....

This sounds promising. I'll look into them myself. To me the $2 extra is worth it if they are cleaner shooting.

rwsmith,

Cleaner barrels, NO LUBE on you or your equipment, lower to no SMOKE OVER CONVENTIONAL LUBES,

no lube damage DUE TO SHIPPING handling or Ambient TEMPERATURES.

Completely ENCAPSULATES the lead.

It works for me and impresses others seeing it at the shooting club.

Ok I gotta ask . What do you gain shooting these over X-Treme plated bullets . In just about all calibers X-treme bought right from them are cheaper . Their prices include shipping .

Nick B,

500 124 Grain RN PLATED are actually 32 cents MORE EXPENSIVE for 500

Shipping price was with both X-Treme and HI-TEC from SNS Casting.

You pay your money and make your choices.

Some of us CAST and COAT our own projectiles.

Some folks just want to PURCHASE THE COMPLETED PRODUCT.
