Dillion presses
I want to take a minute to express my appreciation for my Dillion 550B press. I bought it several years ago and it has loaded several thousand rounds during that time frame.
It has been about 6 months since I last used the press. It sits patiently in my garage waiting for me to return. The temperature in my garage can reach over 100 degrees in the summer time and as low as 12 degrees above zero during one cold spell this winter.
A couple of weeks ago I decide to resupply my ammo cache. I uncovered the press, filled it with powder, and dropped a powder charge. I usually drop eight to ten charges prior to weighing a load, just to consolidate the powder and remover any static cling. This time I decided to weigh the first charge. It was exactly the same as when I left it 6 months ago, 5.6 grs. I weighed five or six more drops and all weighed 5.6 grs.
I have had a few minor problems with the press, but each time a quick call to Dillion gets me going again.
The Dillion 550B is a good choice for someone looking to upgrade to a progressive press.
I love mine (except for that little plastic primer jaw at the bottom of the primer feed tube), seems like I am always changing that out. I guess after 20,000 rounds something that small is acceptable.

I am at roughly 100,000 rounds loaded on my 550 B. They work well & they are good for their word on warranty.

I had a major change in my living arrangements a few years ago, and space is at a big premium. I had my 550B in storage. I made a desk/table out of nice wood, as it is mostly in my living room. I can tolerate my Rockchucker permanently mounted as it does not look bad when I clean the desk off.
I decided to bring the 550B home to see if I could come up with a way to make a removable mount/setup. By stripping off the Strong mount and holders, and drilling four holes in the deck that I cover with a leather pad when not in use, I am back to reloading on it. It's almost like receiving it new so many years ago. Getting it set up, cleaned, lubed and back at cranking out rounds. The last couple of evenings has almost felt like Christmas again ;^)

I've got my dad's 550 that he bought in 1987.... Still runs great. Seeing these pics makes me want to set up the 650 that I've had sitting NIB since last winter.... This week, maybe!

I almost bought one, several times. I would build up a nice chunk of money in my shooting fund and look through the latest copy of the "Blue Press", then, while the drool was still flowing, I'd grab my credit card with one hand and the phone with the other...There was no phone number to order one in the BP. (After several bad experiences with the local post office, I wouldn't send money or credit card information through the mail.) And every time I ended up just buying a new gun instead.
I eventually decided I didn't need one all that bad. I'd still like to have one, or more, I just don't need them.

I got a 550 in the very early 90s after suffering with Lees....what an amazing upgrade! When the 650 was introduced somewhere around 20 yrs. ago, I gave away my Loadmaster and got the 650. Since then it has loaded skillions of .38 Super, 9mm and 40 S&W. The only problems I have is when a part wears out....I just bought new green things for the case feeder. The other thing that happens is the primer wheel accumulates crud(not Dillons fault) and that crud causes inverted primers....UGH. A good cleaning and back to normal.

I've been using a 550 since the mid 80's. Didn't upgrade it to a "B" model until a few years ago, it just keeps cranking them out. Any few problems I have had over the years have been taken care by one phone call.

I could not be happier with my 650 which was an upgrade from my 30 year old Square Deal. My only regret is that it took me too long to do the upgrade!

My 22 year old 550B has probably loaded almost 200,000 rounds since I got it, and it is still pumping them out on a regular basis. A few minor parts have died due to wear and tear. Dillon always sent me a new part for free. Can't ask for better than that.

My 1984 450 that I upgraded to 550 B status, has made over a quarter million rounds. That is a lot of affordable shooting!

I sorta figured I wasn't alone in my liking of the Dillion equipment. I acquired my 550B by chance. I happened to overhear two guys at a local gun store talking about a friend of theirs that had it for sale. Both said they couldn't afford it at the time. I spoke to them and asked if their friend would sell it to me. They said they didn't see any reason he wouldn't. It turns out the seller had bought the press fourteen years prior. He had gotten divorced and was now living in an apartment. The press had never been out of the original Dillion shipping box. All of the plastic packages were still sealed.
The guy sold me the press [set up for .45 ACP], a brand new set of Dillion .45 ACP dies, and a Dillion accessory package for the 550B. The original Dillion order form was folded up in the box. He sold me the works for $250 dollars. I couldn't get my money out fast enough.
Later I called Dillion and told them what I had done and asked if any parts had been updated in the fourteen years since the press was manufactured. The Dillion guy said a couple of things. He took my name and address and mailed me the upgraded item at no cost.
He said they warranty their products for life, no matter how many times a product changes hands. That was three years ago and some 25,000 rounds later. I sure wish they made automobiles and computers like that!!!

Well I guess I am as guilty as are most Dillon owners of touting their products and drinking the blue kool-aid, but in defense of that, I have to say there is a good reason we are all so gung-ho.
Yes their products are damned good. Yes they rarely give us a problem, Yes they are user friendly, BUT THE MAIN REASON IS: no one beats their customer service! In the rare instance that something does break, or for any reason what so ever (including the users fault) Dillon is on it like Flies on Do-Do! Yes, there are other good Company's in the Industry & Hobby, but if I had to vote I'd say Dillon is #1. Just saying.............

RCBS has as good a CS as Dillon.
Dillon is of course top of the line.No doubt
It just gets sooooooo old hearing about it all the time.

I recently purchased a 550B and could not be happier. This is the only press I have loaded on, so I don't have much to compare to, but this equipment is top notch. You can tell it's quality when you put your hands on it. Kinda like a Snap On impact and a Harbor Freight impact, both functioning tools but one will outlast me. Just like I imagine the Dillon will

My current press collection consists of the 550B, a Square Deal B, a RCBS Rock Chucker, and an RCBS Special 5 press. I mostly use the 550B and Rock Chucker. The 550B is set up for .45 ACP only, and I use the others to reload everything from.380 to .44 mag. in pistols loads and .223 to 30-.06 in rifle loads. I even reload the 7.62x54R for my Mosin.
I never have been able to match the round count that Dillion advertises for the 550B. Manually filling the primer tube is a hassle, plus I like to take my time and do things correctly. A couple of months ago I was about to begin a reload session on the 550B when my wife comes into the garage [where I reload] and informs me the family was hungry and would want to eat soon. I quickly set-up everything and loaded 100 rounds of .45 ACp. As I was returning the powder back into the container, it hit me that I had used Win. 748 instead of Win. 231 in the 100 rounds I had just reloaded. Needless to say after lunch I spent the afternoon pulling bullets.
Yes RCBS has top notch CS also. I break things on mine occasionally. I call them to order and pay for the replacement part. They will not accept payment. Recently I let my soldering iron slip over and hit the primer catcher on my Rock Chucker. I was alerted by the smell of burning plastic. I called RCBS to get the correct part number so I could go on-line and buy a replacement. I explained the incident to the RCBS guy and he said he would send me a new one. It arrived three days later and was free [including postage]. The guy said they keep track of what someone orders and if someone abuses the service, then they will start charging for replacement parts. CS like this is good business in the long run. A happy customer will tell three people on average about a product or service, an unhappy customer will tell everyone he meets for ever how bad something is if he thinks he get mistreated.

It would have been interesting to try shooting a couple of those 748 rounds. I really wonder since 748 is a much slower rifle powder what would have happened...would have been a very low charge for 748.
I think the rates of production per hour are based on how fast one can load 100 rounds and that number is extrapolated to an hour. When I'm loading I have lots of primer tubes loaded in advance.
A local guy here once timed himself on a 100 rounds and wrote a letter to the blue press claiming the new worlds record but I don't remember the numbers.

RCBS does have excellent CS. Along with the parts I've lost and extra parts I requested being sent at no charge, a friend of mine gave me an older Lube-a-matic that was missing a part he had misplaced, they replaced it for free too.

Just give RC BS. Away and buy Dillon than you won't mind hearing about it. And it's blue also.

I have a RCBS (Rock Chucker) as well as my Dillon 650 and yes RSCB's customer service is good but IMHO Dillon's progressive presses are just better. I use my RC for 38-55 and 45-70 and my Dillon for everything else.

I don' agree at all.
The last time I had a problem (auto prime issue) with my 550B and had to call Dillon, the first thing I said to the guy on the other end was, I was sorry for bother them with a problem that was most likely easy to fix but I couldn't figure it out or have the parts to do so.
He went out of his way to address my problem. He sent me, at no charge at all, more than enough parts to fix my 550B priming system with a couple of spares to boot!
Then he asked if everything else was working properly with my machine.
So, IMO hearing about Dillon CS doesn't get sooooo old at all.

I spend a lot of time lurking here because it is a great place to learn about S&W revolvers. I never tire of reading about the different models I own and perhaps more importantly the ones I am looking to purchase. I have been wanting to reload for some time so I can shoot more and more often. Also to reuse 32-20 and .22 Jet brass. This and thread and others like it have me leaning towards the Dillon 550. I still have much to learn prior to purchasing a press. My wife suggested I have in my possession primers, powder and bullets before ordering the press.
Just wanted to let you all know how helpful you have been to me.

My original 550 is circa 1985 and it took me two months to save for the purchase on a new State cops salary. I wish I had some way to know exactly how MANY pistol rds it's loaded. Has to be 200K + just by recalling the scores of 5K slips of pistol primers purchased over the years. As well as the 8# kegs of powder.
Yeah most of us here have drunk the blue Kool-Aid but our loyalty is warranted.
Two 550's one for small primers...one for large pistol
One 1050 for 9mm and .45 acp

I started with a Lee Loadmaster, went to a Hornady LNL and then finally got it right with a Dillon 650. Dillon quality is just so much better.
I went with the 650 because I shoot way too many 9mm. The 650 is just a little faster than the 550. If not for that I would have got the 550. I think the 550 is the best value in presses on the market. Great quality, fantastic warranty and great service if you ever need it.

I started out years ago with an RCBS progressive. I don't remember the model. After a divorce, I had no place to put it and the bench with all of my gear, so I sold it. Several years later, I started getting the itch to reload again, and my new wife got me a Lee turret press and I later got a progressive. I wasn't impressed.
I bought a new Dillon 550B a while later. I couldn't believe how much more I liked it than the RCBS. I found I preferred indexing by hand as it gave me a better opportunity to check my powder drop and primer seating if I felt there was a problem.
After a while, a friend came to me and said he was given a Dillon 550B by another Deputy. He said it had been out in a barn for a long time, and was rusted to the point that the ram wouldn't move. However, it came with a bunch of dies and four more powder drops. There were four die plates fully equipped, although a little corroded. I put the press in a bucket of diesel for three months; checking it occasionally. I also stripped down all of the other components and cleaned all of the corrosion off of them. Naval Jelly became my closest friend.
After three months of soaking, I removed the press and started to work on it. I took a dead-blow hammer and got the ram freed up. I then disassembled the press and began cleaning and replacing parts. Dillon sent me everything I requested to complete the project. After I was done, I had a fully operational press. I set up the new press for small primer loads, and the refurbished one for large primer loads. Both have been working well ever since, with and occasional cleaning. I have loaded about 12,000 rounds on the two of them since I started with the. The Dillons are the best out there, IMHO.

Today I called Dillon for a replacement rotor for my LNL powder drop and they refused. I called Hornady and they sent me a replacement. Who has the best customer service NOW?
Take THAT!
Disclaimer - since this is a Dillon thread I should note that this post is 100% sarcastic

Take THAT!
Disclaimer - since this is a Dillon thread I should note that this post is 100% sarcastic

And funny - I don't care who you are.
You see, it's all about The Mascot. Ya'll need a mascot.

Dillon 550B
I too use my Dillon exclusively for handgun ammo, loading my rifle stuff on an RCBS Rockchucker.
I love the Dillon except for when I have to change the priming system from one size to another. Another potential drawback is: the press would be safer to use of the shell plate automatically rotated as the lever or arm was returning to the upright position, thus further guarding against an accidental double charge, which can happen if you become pre-occupied with a problem at the first station.
As with any reloading system, procedure or product,
avoid distractions and only load when you're mentally fresh and sober. There's only so much idiot-proofing that can be built into a reloading press.

If you want that feature you can upgrade to the XL650.

I as well love my 550b. The only thing I guard against is watching "Judge Judy" and reloading at the same time. Can anyone say "squib"!

A recent study was done and the following was reported.
Post Purchase Rationalization or Choice supportive bias, another form of Cognitive dissonance.
By constantly glorifying how good the product is, they try to justify and how much they spent, even if it is a good product.

Rule3,
Like how accurate a powder measure is?
It's a tool -- now get back to work. The Reloading Hour will now resume.

It boarders on group narcissism. There is a Dillon Forum with lots of camaraderie and high fives going on.
I just bought a Les Baer Custom 25th Aniversery (it is the greatest of all 1911's!) to go with my Rolex Yacht-Master II.(the greatest of watches)
Think I shall go to the Yacht Club, board the Hatteras(it's white) and gaze upon them now.

Oh now.
C'mon, it's one "Dillon Appreciation" thread.
All of the "What press should I buy" or "what dies should I buy" or "What T-Shirt should I buy" threads that mention Dillon always have at least as many, if not more, comments about Lee.
It's Rock Chucker Guy I wonder about. Dem Green boys is a quiet bunch, for sure.

Some people wont be satisfied with anything.
It absolutely astounds me as to how great Dillon's customer service is, in an era when customer service is a dying art.
I load .380 auto, 9mm, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .44 Special, .44 Magnum, and .45 ACP handgun on a Square Deal B.
I load .223, .30 Carbine, .308 Winchester, and .30-06 Springfield on a RL 550B. Soon I will be loading .30-30 Winchester, 7.62x39, and .300 Blackout on the 550 B as well.
The Square deal has loaded well over 100,000 rounds of ammo (Prob closer to 200,000) and the 550 50,000 rounds easy.
Dillon, without hesitation, has rebuilt my Square Deal twice. I only paid to ship it to them, and they paid return shipping. I wear that press out making ammo, and they just keep rebuilding it for free.
Recently, I was changing calibers on the Square Deal, and my young daughter came into the room and pulled the handle. The detent ball for the shell plate went flying - never to be seen again. I called Dillon and explained it was our fault - expecting to pay for the part. Nope - it was sent out for free and arrived less than 48 hours later.
I will absolutely be loyal to a company who takes care of me that well. Then I will tell others and encourage them to buy from that company.

Dillon Owners
Dillon Owners are elitist. We want a press that works when we want to reload. We don't want another maintenance project.
I drive a Chevy Colorado, wear a Seiko, have a Rock Chucker and $15 Lee press sitting on the shelf. My RC gets used for rifle ammo, and the Lee is used only for 45-70 because the only dies available when I got my Quigley was Lee 45-70.
Midway had a Lee press and Lee Reloading Manual for $20. Ever one buys a bargain that they regret forever .
