IMR 4227 in the 9mm
I looked at an OLD IMR data manual that I have and see that the velocity should be "Sub-Sonic" in its speed and the pressure is so low, that I had to load a few , just to see if they will cycle in the Springfield.
Flipped a coin to see if the 115 or the 124 plated got the nod and it came up, the 124gr RN. At only 13,000 cup I added .5grs hoping that the weapon would eject and cycle with the heavier bullet and there was about .18" of space at the top of the case, before I set the bullet at an OAL of 1.14"
I adjusted the seating die to a 124gr already loaded and got ready to seat my bullets...........
NOT!!
This powder is very fine and fills the case quite full....... trying to get the full stroke on "This load" was not happening like the last load with Unique powder. This load did however work with the 1.16" OAL and that is what will be tested on the next trip out.
IMR states that 8.8c will work with a oal of 1.125" with this bullet..........
Maybe the data should of read: 8.8C not 8.8c.
Well the loads are loaded no backing out...........will post after the test. Just curious on what turns up in speed & cycling conditions......... and hoping the extra length has enough speed to clear the 4" barrel !!
I did see on You-Tube a load that was SS that worked and with the low report he was shooting in his back yard with homes in sight !!
Have any of you tried this "Very Slow" powder with any jacked bullets in the 9mm?
Later.

I tried it a few weeks back. no chronograph. 124 fmj bullet over 8.5 would not cycle the M&P 9. case remained in the gun. Tried same load with 147 and it fired and cycled. unburnt powder left in the barrel both times.

Powders this slow just aren't suitable for something like the 9mm. One big issue is that if you don't get the pressure high enough to achieve complete ignition you will see an extreme variation in the shot to shot velocity with a real and present potential for a squib if using plated bullets.
If you want powder puff loads choose a faster powder better suited to the caliber and bullet weight. For a subsonic load in 9mm one powder I can recommend highly would be Accurate #2, it meters wonderfully and will produce a 9mm load that feels like a 22 LR. Another great powder for reduced recoil that steps up the velocity a big from #2 is IMR SR7625. I use a lot of 7625 in 40 S&W and 45 ACP loads and it's a very soft shooting powder that meters like water.

Ok.........
You guys talked me out of it.......... I pulled the bullets.
That sure is a LOT EASIER than pulling 38's !!
Went with a light load of Green Dot, instead. One manual has the load at around 999 fps but there is no barrel length or OAL with this old manual............ but I do trust it's "starting loads".
The phrase.. "unburnt powder" got my attention. Not that the word "Squib" did not help push me over the edge, either.
Hope this load works out since a nice light target load is always nice to have, for a change of pace.
Later.

It also works well in 22 hornet, 218 bee, and 30 carbine. It'll also do in a pinch in 44 magnum, but I'd think it way too slow for a 9mm.

I use 4227 in 30 Carbine and 32/20. Want to try it in 45 Colt but most of my loadings in that round are pretty mild 8gr Unique under 250gr LRN or 255gr LSWC. No need for a magnum round for plinking.

you seem to be in search of things "not to do" recently.
I've added 3 things to my recommended "Not to try" list from some of your recent posts.
How about a good 158 L SWC, 357 load for 50 yards?

Bought a case of 4227 when loading for my Jet-- still have most of it-- was going to give it away, but thought better of it. 4.0 og RED DOT works with a 124 gr, in my 639 just fine--

50 yard 158gr Lead Mag load................?
Easy.
Use Trail Boss.................but you can SAVE a full grain of powder if you switch over to the smaller 38 special case...........
but not mandatory.
I normally never use a 357 case for lead target loads......
but you can do what ever your little pea picking heart tells you to do.

TRAIL BOSS?
wow, not what I expected! but with almost a whole 2 years worth of experience - my little pea picking heart doesn't tell me much.
I do have a pound of it, still untried in anything, well I guess its less than a pound - but its full - however much is in there.
Okay, I'll try it, I've been meaning to load up some 38 specials,
but if I'm loading it in 38 cases, I'll shoot it out of my M67 4 inch

Well I thought you were looking for a "Lite" 50 yard load not a super fast 50 yard load...............
In the mag case there is 5.0grs of Bullseye, 5.7grs of Red Dot or 6.0grs of Unique if you need 918fps or more..........
even 11.0grs of SR 4759 if you have it......
Just depends on how you want to get to 50 yards ...............
All depends on how you stare into the...............
crystal ball.
