After two junk Chronys I bought a Competition Electronics digital for
$99 and have been happy with it. Don't waste your money on a Chrony.

I use an F1. About 10 years ago I shot it. They will replace it for a reduced price, so I ordered the master with the display on a cord. I have not shot the new one yet. Like all it does not like the sunlight. Cloudy days or I set it up in the shade. Mine works for me.

Back then the all the other brands cost a lot more.

I've had a Chrony since 1990. It's the old model one with the cardboard ' windows ' that hold the sun shades. So, there's not much margin of error if you pull your shots any. I think the new models have metal rods that hold the sun shades.
I can not compare because it's the only one I've had and used. It doesn't care for bright direct sun. Works with the sun shades, or overcast /cloudy days , or in the shade.

I usually get a low / error velocity reading on the first shot. But after that it seems to work fine.

Sort of nice having remote control or a wire to your table for
control of the readout unit........... than trying to read numbers
ten feet away......... but that's just me.

Good luck.

I have been using a F-1 since the late 80's or early 90's. I use a lithium 9V battery and leave it unplugged. Has worker fine, I also have a Alpha Master, but the F-1 lives in the rifle range bag. Never had trouble reading the numbers at the close distance you normally use them at, although we have set it up at 100 yards to test some BC's and read with a spotting scope. Now days if you shoot it don't waste time with the factory replacement. One of the guys at the club had a CE and I found it to be over priced junk compared to my F-1, so to each his own. The best group of shots on a Crony award went to a friend who borrowed a Beta Master and forgot that the bore is below the line of sight, and with a 223 put 3 in the target in the Crony logo. The inside looked like a wrecked mouse nest. He replaced the borrowed one and bought the same for himself and shot it to pieces two days later. Two things happened, we have a board up with a running Crony tally on it and absolutely nobody will loan this guy any shooting equipment! Ivan

The numbers at 10 to 12 feet away are easy to read.. It's those darn front sights that are hard to see. Even with the rifles the fronts sights are fuzzy anymore for some reason .?

If you live anywhere that has SUN the Chrony brands suck. False readings, no reading, bad readings. Since getting the Competition Electrons I have not missed one reading.

Look at the reviews 4.6 with 186 reviews.

Do a search here on this forum there are many many threads on this exact subject.

You can read the numbers just fine at 10 feet, if you shoot the thing that's your fault.

If you can not get a bullet through the uprights when using a rest, they you should be knitting or something. A rifle with scope is a little trickier but once you figure it out no problem.

If by chance you do kill it, they will repair it for 1/2 price.

I've owned my F1 Shooting Chrony since the early 90's. I use it indoors and have had 0 issues with it.

Trade In Your Chrony

Look here. Its not the best but has not failed me in about 20 years except when I shot it.

Do as you wish.

I've had two of them, nothing but false readings under most conditions. Switched to a Pact XP and no more issues. It's just one of those tools that you really need to be able to trust and rely on for those few times you actually get it out to test a load.

Since the mid 80s I have had five Shooting Chronys and all have given me false readings or "ERROR" messages. I finally bought a Competition Electronics Digital Pro and have yet to get an "ERROR" message. Competition Electronics Digital Pro are less sensitive to lighting and are more user friendly with easy to read/use function buttons.

The Comp Electronics chrono is a no-brainier. Works great, good price, and made in USA.

Just don't shoot it the thing. I just had to test out those nice 10mm hotties with the new 'ghost ring' sights. Did I mention that I'm not real fond of the ghost ring sights...?

You know what's great, though? I was only out $90! That was a pretty easy replacement, and I have not murdered a chronograph since. Live and learn...
