Max Plus Loads ?
99.9% of my shooting is punching holes in paper or knocking down steel plates, so I reload accordingly. For serious social occasions I usually keep a couple boxes of store brought, with maybe a box or two of reloads, just because.
Anyway, I was cleaning up my reloading bench / checking my reloading / ammo supplies. And found a box of 9mm, the tag was dated 4/2000, 124 gr golden saber JHP , 4.8 grs of w231.
Grabbed my lastest reloading book and it showed 4.4 grs. of w231 as Max. I had to go back to my Hornady 3rd ed. to find the load. which showed 5.2 as max.
I also found a box of 45 acp dated 2001, 230 XTP HP with 9 grs. of HS-6. Hornady's 3rd. ed. shows 9.7 grs. max. Hornady 9th ed. now shows 8.2 grs. max.
I'm a go by the book kind of guy and never load over max. ! When I saw these loads I thought ,, what the heck,, and were the heck did I get those numbers ???
BTW, I have shot some of these loads in the past, no problems ,, no signs of over pressure,, etc.. And the chrono velocity was right in line with what the 3rd edition book indicated.

For the 124gr Golden Saber. The current test data is not for that bullet. I have not seen data for that bullet (wish I did as I like it and use the factory stuff at times)
Data changes based on different tests. Change anything, brass, primer bullet, test data lot number etc the whole results are different.

There are at least two "things" that could be different. I have noticed that says in the Lyman 49th edition that the COAL in most of their loads are shorter than speer 14th edition. So with a shorter COAL the volume changes and less powder is in order. If fact in the speer #10 there is no listed OAL for various bullet weights just a COAL spec on the first page of each caliber. If the chrono data matches then I would not be too concerned. Second, might be reducing loads for possible "lawsuits"?? There does seem to be a time when people were trying to make a 357 mag more like a 44 mag and the velocities for 357 mag went crazy. The speer #10 manual was a prime example of hot.

You should get 1085 fps +/- out of a 4" barrel with the Nato oal of 1.16.5" with that load.
My minimum oal is 1.125" with a 124gr FMJ...........
I have not loaded any JHP as yet.
I have manuals that use MORE w231, so you should be ok with that load, around 28,800 CUP.

I agree, the current test data listed isn't for the Golden Saber. That was just the first book I picked up. I have several books and many reloading notes / information from the past 40 some years of reloading. Haven't tracked down the orginial source yet.
The 45 acp was the same components ,, same OAL, even the same brand name manual, Hornady. And the max went from 9.7 grs to 8.2 grs.
I never load over the max.
Mostly just indicating my shock and confusion about finding a load that was so much over the current max. And how much the reloading data changes.

Pretty darn close Ed.. My notes show I got 1088 fps average out of a G17.
Usually I'm about 1.130 to 1.165 on OAL , however some of the JHP's run a bit shorter.
Thanks for the info.
I have a G17L and a CZ that are picky about OAL with a truncated cone shape bullet. Which I am getting away from the TC bullets because I don't care for having a lot of different loads for different guns of the same caliber. My STI seem to take about any OAL / bullet shape you want to shove in it..
I watch & check my OAL on 9's quite closely.

I do not load over either. So you must have had data from some manual. Stuff changes all the time. Some say it's Lawyers, I do not buy that. It is testing has changed, better equipment, different procedures etc, etc.
Heck even the Speer Nuclear #8 I have found NEW data higher than that manual, so who really knows??
You said you have shot them and all was well, so it does not seem to be a problem.
