Default 9mm 3" barrel finals

Finally got into the hotter loads with factory dup. loads to see what the powder would spit out in the short 9mm barrel.
In the 115gr I was very disappointed with the fps of the Bullseye powder, Red Dot beat it by 41 fps and it was not even a maximum load. Unique had two loads at the top that were accurate and the maximum did shoot the best, even though it was 1" low vs the other that was at POA.

The 124gr had trouble getting a head of steam out of the 3.1" barrel and had barely enough fps to let a Gold Dot open up if used for a SD loading. I did not load any Blue Dot powder, hoping that the Unique or SR 4756 would get the needed fps and they both came in at the minimum with their low chrony readings.

The good news is that the low end Red Dot in both bullets shot at or under 1" groups at 926 and 890 fps with the plated bullets making for a very nice light target load that ejected without any problems.

This picture is the standard 9mm loadings from my manuals from Alliant, Speer and Lyman ....... no +p loads were used....
even though the 115gr load with Unique was full to the brim, almost.

The fastest 115gr worked out to 347 ft/lbs of energy while the fastest 124gr load worked out at 344 ft/lbs of energy. That is what I call a dead heat and comes down to what bullet weight you prefer, or what load feeds the best.

Ed,

Thanks to your earlier response to my hunt for good SD loads for my 3.1" barreled Shield, I've decided to go with manufactured loads that go well beyond what I could come up with reloading. For the 9mm, these appear to be the best of the best, for short barreled pistols:

1. Ammo Quest 9mm: Federal HST 124 grain tested in ballistic gelatin test review - YouTube

2. Ammo Quest 9mm: Federal HST 147gr standard pressure test in ballistic gel - YouTube

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

Glad to help out some.............

Yes, the HST are very impressive in those test.......
hard to believe a BIG 147gr does so well out of a little 3.1" barrel.

Even though the 115gr Winchester white box passed the test
it seems pretty light to me for SD work but it is a great load for those that may be recoil shy
or want super fast follow up shots, with that low velocity.
