Default Plenty of unique

I walked in my favorite reloader supply store and there was a complete isle of unique, bullseye and 2400 powder. Just as Ireached for my credit card I woke up.

Just withdrawl symptoms of doing without powder. When will it end?

Not that I know about. I usually get a friend to buy mine at gun shows.

You've got that right, stopped in at the Fin last Saturday and they had to have had 20 or 30 lbs of Unique on display. They also had at least 3 eight pound kegs of Bullseye. As for myself, I came away with 3 lbs. of Accurate #5.

I didn't think there is. I have to depend on buying online, & shell out the haz-mat fee. Forty years ago there were dozens of places in the area selling loading supplies. I believe the closest retailer now is at Summit, outside of Ashland. Cheaper to pay the haz-mat fee than drive that far. Ain't Obama's America grand?

An old habit from 35 years of reloading and shooting. I've always have kept large amounts of supplys along with bricks of 22 shells. For the last few years it's paid off. But I'm ready to get some stuff again as it becomes available.

I'm with you ADK Mike.
I started stocking up on componants in late 2008 and have kept several years of need in stock, so I can ride through these scarcity and inflationary times.
I probably ought to pick up a few pounds of powder some day.

When you see something you use nowadsys you should buy it. A few months ago I bought my first ever 4 lb container of Unique. The LGS had two of them but no 1 lb containers.

If I get on a loading binge, I can go through Unique pretty quickly, especially if I'm loading multiple calibers(saves me having to clean out the powder measure).

The last time I saw Unique for sale was at a gun show back in November. I let the seller then talk me into an 8lb jug for $140, and have not regretted it in the least bit. I've not yet opened the big jug, but probably will need to in the next couple of weeks

I think that I'm going to buy the next 8lb jug of Bullseye that I see for sale.

deanodog that was cruel, good but cruel.

I saw an ad on a local website, guy is selling N320 and N330 for $50/lb. Still more than I'm willing to pay.

Most Vihtavourhi powders retail for right around $40/lb around here. I think that the pound of N310 I bought a few months back was $39 and change on the shelf. Add in sales tax and the guy probably isn't making more than a couple of bucks a pound.

As much as I like the Viht. powders I've used, they are certainly not cheap.

Haven't seen on any shelves myself. I looked online and saw it at $33.50/lb before shipping and hazmat. He's probably not too far out of line, I just refuse to pay that much period.

I'm not sure it will. There are only two plants in the US producing powder. One is in FL. owned by General Dynamics and the other is in CT owned by ATK, another huge defense contractor. Apparently, handloaders are small potatoes to these companies and last on the list for powder production. When they get large gov't (ordnance) or commercial (ammo) contracts they don't make powder for you and me. That leaves the foreign mfg's to fill the void which they can't. That is why there is no powder.

If powder for us was a huge concern for them we would have powder now but it's not and we don't.

Is it going to change? Not until they supply the gov't and the ammo companies with all the powder they want.

If this or the next adm uses an executive order to ban the import of powder like they did with some ammo we are going to see a real shortage, much worse than what we have now. Buy it when you see it.

No it isn't and powder, component and ammo companies have been telling us this for several years. There are no government or military contracts that are any larger or important than previously, thus no more production for them is needed. Powders, ammo and components for military and government usage are generally produced in separate plants than those for the average consumer and always have, so again no different than in recent years past. This has been shown to be the case over and over again, but still the rumors of "secret government contracts" or "Huge Government ammo buy" continue. Similar to Bigfoot sightings.

The difference is the increase demand from consumers. Not only are there more shooters and reloaders than ever, but they are shooting more often and more ammo when they shoot. They are also buying in larger quantities when they do buy than they used to. Then there are the hoarders and scroungers. In many areas, supply catching up with demand is readily apparent. In some areas not so much yet. Around here, powder, primers and bullets are back on shelves that were empty a year ago. Same is true for most ammo.......including .22LR.

Default Plenty of pistol powder...

At Camp Perry last week, some of the vendors had pallets of pistol powders. Bullseye, Red Dot, Blue Dot, Auto Comp, Power Pistol and others.
Prices were in the area of $140 for 8lbs, average.
By the end of the day, most were sold out, but they put out new supplies/stock each day.

We're awash with 8 lb jugs of powder here also, they just sell out of it momentarily right before I go to buy it.

The powder is going to the military and the ammo manufacturers.

The U S powder mfg's aren't going to tell you who they sell their powder to but I know for a fact they aren't selling any to Hodgdon. Aliant is owned by ATK so they have some canister powder to sell but not much.

don't worry guys.
powder will soon be out there just like black rifles...a dime a dozen and cheap, as the money and credit of others can't hold on much longer.

Hogdon distruibutes IMR and Winchester powders in the USA. IMR is made by Expro in Canada, Winchester by St Marks Powder in Florida. Both FACTORIES are subsidiaries of General Dynamics. They make the powder and send it by the barrel to Hodgdon for packaging and sale.

Hodgdon Spherical powders are made in the St Marks plant. Several of them are the same as Winchester powders, just under different labels. HP38 and Win. 231 are the same stuff.

Hodgdon extruded and flake powders are imported from ADI in Australia.

From the Hodgdon website.....make sure to read the second page.

Lake City Army Ammunition Plant: Arsenal of democracy: he'd always wanted to see where the ammo he was shooting was made, and a transcontinental transfer gave him the chance. Here's what he saw at Lake City. - Free Online Library

Please note

Quote:
Actually seeing the plant was amazing. Lake City currently manufactures ammunition in 5.56mm, 7.62mm, .50 Cal, and assembles 20mm cartridges. For the small and medium ammunition up to .50, LC actually makes every component onsite (except for the gunpowder, which is subcontracted out; and the 7.62mm M118LR 175-grain MatchKing projectiles, which, are subcontracted out to Sierra Bullets).
As far as I know the powder is coming from St Marks. Radford makes nitrocellulose but not powder as it is only one component.

We are on totally different planets.

When did they change the color and style of UNIQUE ? !

I just got some and added it to the old orange bottle......
so my brain would know I had some, when looking for it.

Did the same with the new Bullseye !!

No Unique or 2400 available here. But IMR#4227 is showing up.......Got some.......Dug out my old Speer #8 manual. Has loadings for 38/357/44spl/44mag/45LC using 4227.....So I can still load until my regular stuff becomes available again.

The problem will stop when people stop paying $50/lb plus shipping on Gunbroker. As long as people continue to pay crazy prices people will buy all they see at the LGS to flip it on Gunbroker. The same thing goes for .22LR Ammo....
