Magnum Primers for 9mm???
Howdy all,
I think I already know the answer to this question but I thought I'd ask a few experienced reloaders to check myself...
I told a friend I'd load some 9mm target-ammo for him.
124g Rainier projos.
He's been saving his own brass for a while, and I told him I'd help him with the powder since I buy it in 8# jugs. But, I told him he had to buy his own primers.
I told him what to buy, but he made the mistake of buying Magnum small pistol primers instead of regular ones (internet purchase; no possibility for return). He bought 3000 OF THEM!!!
So, what do you-all think of using them with Win231 or Ramshot ZIP?
Just TP loads...
Thanks ahead of time.

I wouldn't be overly concerned with a mid range 231 load (where did you get that?) You might ask around and see if you can trade someone for regular SPP.

Don't know about Ramshot, but HP38/WIN231 or Titegroup makes no sig difference on the chrono for 9mm minor power with SP magnum Win primers. I'm using them now myself.

A small pistol MAG primer puts out more energy than a small rifle primer (at least CCI do) in a high pressure round like 9mm just use a middle to low charge to start out and see how it goes.

I have used them before when they were all I could get and they worked fine with 231 just don't start at the top.

During a primer shortage a few years ago, I used some with mid-range 231 9mm loads and had no problems.

A few years ago I managed to pick up 1000 magnum primers instead of the normal ones. I did not notice my mistake until I had loaded several hundred rounds. When I chronographed the loads the ones with magnum primers were ca 20 fps faster. This was with mild mid range loads.

The good thing is that you can use LESS powder........
and maybe get better accuracy ?
I have tried mag primers in all my reloads, revolver, pistol, rifle and shotgun.... to see if they might be the "One" load that did best.
They usually do best with Ball powders but they can work with the other types under the right conditions.
Best of luck what ever you do.

I think you definitely want to keep your load down to or near minimum for function. My experience is that a 9mm, being a high-pressure cartridge to begin with, is not tolerant of component changes. Pressures can jump very quickly.

Today...
Today magnum primers can practically considered universal AS LONG AS the load is reduced. I can only think of one exception
(Blue Dot) that recommends standard primers, though it is a magnum powder.

Stay below max pressure and you should be fine.

Thanks for the replies guys!
Well, I FINALLY got around to testing the magnum primers in the 9mm rounds yesterday... I used Ramshot ZIP for powder, 124g Ranier HP projos, Winchester WSPM (small pistol magnum) primers.
In a nutshell; I didn't notice ANY difference or see any increased pressure signs in the loads I tested...
In the past, using standard primers (CCI or Federal) I had loaded that same powder/projo combination using 4 grains of ZIP, and it was plenty to cycle to gun with maybe just a very "slight" (I mean very-very slight) flattening of the primer face. (FWIW, The jug of ZIP calls for a 4.2g load behind 115g projos).
To be safe with the magnum primers, I loaded a few at 3.3g, 3.5g. 3.7g, and 3.9g and tried them out.
The 3.3g & 3.5g loaded wouldn't even cycle my Springfield XD test gun. The 3.7g load just b-a-r-e-l-y cycled the gun (spent cases were literally landing on my feet or rolling off the front of the slide, LoL...).
The 3.9g load ejected the cases with a little bit more authority, but still only a couple of feet off to my side...
So, essentially, I'm back with the same 4g load behind 124g projos with the magnum primers...
I personally thought I'd end up somewhere around 3.7 or 3.8 grains with the primer change, but hey, 4 is a nice round rumber...
Thanks again all!

The Springfield XD that I loaded for worked with Red Dot at
1090 fps and Green Dot at 1060 fps for a low target speed with a plated 124gr bullet set at a OAL of 1.16".
Twenty foot off hand groups were around two inches for my Grand Son, shooting his new pistol.
I have gone lower in the 3" Kahr with these powders, to 890 and 899 fps without any problems....... but at a 1.14" OAL.

With a slight adjustment....
With a slight downward adjustment in powder it should be equal. SOME powders don't like magnum primers as well, but in most cases it makes no difference.

Don't know about magnum primers, but I have used rifle primers when primers were hard to get loading 9 and 40's with no ill affects
