Default Ohaus always been made in china?

So I got this reloading bug going. Starting to get a lot of equipment, which has offset any savings

I started to look for a nice balance beam scale. Everyone says get the RCBS 5-0-5 its made in USA and all that... yet every box I have seen of those 5-0-5s are stamped with a "MADE IN CHINA". Thought that was a little strange. Scale inside says made for RCBS by Ohaus. No other indication of its origin.

I drank the blue koolaid a little while back, ordered the Dillon Balance beam scale (also made by Ohaus, same scale as the 5-0-5 I believe). Unpacked it and was very pleased with the scale, nicely made and very nice to use. I love it. Turn it over and a nice little sticker on the inside "Made in China"

So, when did Ohaus go overseas? Were they always? Assembled in US, cast in China?

Just curious, I love the scale. It's going to stay on my shelf along with all the other blue koolaid.

What's not made in China? Buy a new model 92 Winchester, guess where it's made...Japan . Not the good old USA that's for sure.
I still try to buy American but it's getting harder every day.
Right now I can think of three businesses that operate in the States...Kim Ahrend's grips , CH4D and Randall Made Knives.
I still drive a 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle because the build sheet said it was made in Atlanta, Georgia USA.
Enough ranting....Gary

The are still based in New Jersey.

They make scales and then they make SCALES. Perhaps not all are made in China just the low end ones?? I don't know but a good question.

It is real hard to find anything NOT made in China these days. I am glad I bought most of my power tools before the switch to China happened. Even the new Skill Saws are made in China, Penn fishing reals, you name it, what a travesty.

I just flipped over my 14 year old 505 scale, its made in Union NJ, USA!

So they at least used to cast those scales here in the US at one point.

Like I said, I love the scale... it does not feel cheap or have any finishing issues. Operates flawlessly.

It's also a big possibility that the frame is cast in china, however the rest is still in house. No markings on anything else.

I know the Hornady balance scales are made in-house at Hornady, at least I was told on the phone it was.

My RCBS (OHAUS) 10-10 Scale is made in the USA and it is clearly marked. That said..... it's also about 30 years old.

Chinese workers work cheap, don't require healthcare, 401K, workers compensation, day care for their kids, and 30 days paid vacation.

They come to work on time, sober and ready to do a full day's work.
They found the work ethic that America lost 30 years ago.

That's why everything is made in China.

Florham Park, NJ if I'm not mistaken.

Considered a classic by most.

Hard to find anything actually fabricated in the USA anymore. Just about everything used to be made her, not so for along time. Thank a liberal for this, they are the ones pushing EPA, higher taxes, Obamacare, etc.

The 1980s-vintage RCBS 304 scale in the photo below was made by Ohaus in Florham Park, New Jersey according to the label at the bottom front of its base.

Although I no longer use it, I consider it irreplaceable, plan to keep it and have turned down some very attractive and tempting offers for it.

Even Starrett has some low end calipers made in China.
You have to look sharp to get their US equipment unless you have an unlimited budget.
Having said that, my RCBS dial caliper was made in China 30 years ago and works fine.

Years ago I bought a leupold wind river spotting scope... all their "MADE IN THE USA ALWAYS" hype.. I bought into it, box clearly marked made in Japan.
I contacted them concerning this, they never even gave me the courtesy of an answer on it.. don't buy much Leupold anymore!!

Unless it is an ABSOLUTE EMERGENCY I refuse to buy any tool, piece of machinery, mechanical devise etc. made in China. If I want a specific tool (lets say a Milwaukee electric tool - now made in China) I'll find an older model either NIB (new old stock) or a very gently and cared for used one.

I own, collect and use old vintage GE Fans around the house (yes we do have central a/c but we like a soft breeze too) and although the years of manufacture range from 1914 to 1945 they all work perfectly and are quiet, efficient and never give me any problems. The new plastic ****** ones from China------ JUNK!

So can someone explain to me how China is less communist than New Joisey? I don't like it either, but for some things you've got to go commie. Want a new shovel? Stop at a yard sale and buy genuine USA. Also better quality if it was made 30 years or more ago. Same for most hand and garden tools.

Japan actually makes some pretty good stuff. The Miroku guns made for Browning and Winchester is better than Made in USA for the last 50 years. Good steel, good workmanship, fit as well as American from the 1930s.

This has been going on since the mid 90s. Waaaaay before Obamacare.

Don't forget that the avg consumer wants "value". No one wants to pay more. No one counts in the unions, the $20/hr pay, health care, and yes taxes and EPA fees. People just look at the product and say "wow why is this so much? It's only a........" This is the same reason certain products cost more at a supermarket than at a farmers market. Because at a supermarket a portion of that price is for the pharmacy, the cafe, the transportation and so on. It takes more money to run a bigger place and the cost gets passed on to the consumer. All my fruits and vegetables shopping is done at a farmers market, it's roughly half price.

And another thing....everyone complains about the EPA. And i agree that lately they have gone bonkers but at the same time does anyone really think that without oversight these corporations would really police themselves? It's been proven over and over all around the world that without someone standing over them they will always do what's cheaper for the bottom line even if it's dumping toxic chemicals into your ground and water.

I gave a guy something like $100 for a box full of old, NIB Lyman reloading equipment. Had a turret press, 55 powder measure, lots of other stuff and this scale. Works OK. Made in some commie state of New jur zee.

Pulled out mine and on top it reads: RCBS
5-0-5 scale
5-0-5 is a registered t.m.
of OHAUS SCALE CORP.
This sticker on front also has an ounce to grain conversion chart.

Turn it over, cast into the underside is:
MFG . BY OHAUS SCALE CORP.
UNION, N.J., U.S.A.
7101-10

There is a sticker that reads:H440-17-88
The scale is not that old. I'm thinking 1988 might be the date? But at least it's made USA.

Actually assembled in USA. Most parts are shipped from japan. Only a actual car requires import tax for auto.

"Assembled in USA" provides American jobs. Works for me.

I have a Model 10-10, and it was made in the US, but I've been using this one for over 30 years. It looks remarkably similar to that Lyman in post #25.

Right now I can think of two businesses that operate in the States...Kim Ahrend's grips and Randall Made Knives.
I still drive a 1968 Chevrolet Chevelle because the build sheet said it was made in Atlanta, Georgia USA.

If it was built in Atlanta, it was built at the Lakewood plant.
If it was built in Doraville, it was built at the Doraville plant.
I remember when the Lakewood plant closed.

I still hate that Sears Craftsman tools are mostly made in China now.
Even the Craftsman Professional line isn't made in the states anymore (Taiwan).

Default china

What most people don't take into consideration is that China is our enemy. They killed our troops in Korea, they supplied Nrth Vietnam with arms, as did Russia. That is what goes through my mind when tempted to buy China made products. Joe Carroll

The Chinese were mass producing state of the art war weapons when Europeans were wearing pelts and hunting with clubs. A quality Chinese product is as good as the best.

Over the years, Ohaus has moved the production of their balance beam scale out of the USA, first to Mexico, after NAFTA, then to Western Europe, and currently to China. The accuracy is unchanged.

I have owned several reloading presses, couple of powder measures, dozens and dozens of reloading die sets, couple of case trimmers, but only one powder scale. Ohaus 10-10 came to me pre-owned, as new in original box, for a $20 bill in 1974. Still works perfectly. Pretty sure it was manufactured in the USA.

Of course, that was $20 in 1974 money, back when that would fill up the gas tank of my Ford F100 and still leave me with about $12 in change. Or the same $20 bill would buy a week's groceries for my family of 4, still leaving me with a few bucks in my pocket. Four cartons of cigarettes. Or I could take about 40 of my closest friends out for coffee at Denny's.

In reality, $20 was the amount I allowed myself each week for gasoline and lunch money. Usually I would scrimp on lunches so I could stop off for a cold beer on the way home from work, maybe once per week.

My RCBS 10-10 made by Ohaus is a slightly vintage version. Not sure when it was made, but when it was, it was produced in Florham Park, NJ.

I highly doubt they are still being made there, just like everything else in this modern "consumable" society.

Default I prefer buying American.....

but, if domestic manufacturer doesn't make it you haven't much choice. Doing without isn't going to do anything to help our economy.

.....anything made in German, Italy or Japan. Add England and Mexico into the mix. Cuba has been our enemy, too, but we are one the verge of at least being able to trade. The French and Indian war, Spain is on the dirty list as well as the Philippines.

Trade is good for everybody. If we aren't enemies we trade. If we are enemies, we fight.

There's nothing wrong with feeling resentment. If that's the way you feel, that's the way you feel. But not trading with other countries is pretty much cutting off our nose to spite our faces.

I'd say that China is more our adversary in an economic instead of shooting war now.

I believe the Doraville, GA GM plant has closed. Drove past last weekend and the plant looked shut down. I was told a year ago (?) that the plant shut down as part of the down sizing, move to China, move to Mexico, excess capacity story.

This is a reloading thread, so I'll get back on topic. I'm guessing most dies and presses are still made in the USA, primarily because the market for these things is not big enough to warrant large scale production overseas -- and the efficiencies/economies that brings with it.

"MFG . BY OHAUS SCALE CORP.
UNION, N.J., U.S.A.
7101-10"
You still need to watch the verbiage. MFG by OHAUS, does not necessarily mean that it's made in USA. It only means that the manufacturer is in the USA, meaning that USA manufacturer can and does have overseas facilities that actually MAKE the product.
I would only believe something that actually reads "Made in USA", otherwise the manufacturer is simply fooling you into believing that it is made here by the use of the wording to make it appear so.

That is why most of my reloading equipment is older. Made in the US. Saturday I got a new in box RCBS 10-10 in an auction when I bought a box with six pounds of Green Dot powder and a couple thousand primers. I was surprised that the scale had never been out of the box. Owners manual suggests made in 1978...in the US
