Tested out some near maximum loads today with two 55gr
and one load with a big 70gr Speer SP flat base with a faster powder.

I was hoping for higher fps but you got to go with what the rifle puts out. Not 3600 fps + but close enough, I guess.

I was blown away with the group from the 70gr flat base bullet
since its BC really sucks..............

Will try out the NEW 55gr Nosler poly-tip Var-Mag on the next outing to see if it can whoop the 55gr V-Max that get .48 at 100 yards with 4064 and 4350.

Nice on the 70 gr. That heavier bullet would put a thumping on something. What twist in your 250?

There's something about the 70 grains that your rifle really likes.

Did you shoot the three groups in order, left to right? I wonder, because sometimes it takes us a few shots to get to where everything is comfortable and it all sort of comes together. Neither of those first two groups is worth rejecting; I think I would try them both again, and maybe move up a half grain or even a full grain if you aren't at the top of the spectrum.

But I would agree: that rifle of yours REALLY likes the 70s!

Going by the diameter of the holes punched that group looks to be in the range of 0.44 inch center to center. If you were shooting off a sandbag with the stock nestled into your shoulder that is darned good shooting. If you were using a rifle rest that's a darned good shooting load.

It goes against the grain, but I have always got better groups with flatbase bullets. It is all I shoot.

Most data states that a 1:12 or 1:10 does better with the bullets larger than 64 grs......... that is why I was surprised with this group.

I tried a #1370 Sierra 63gr many years ago and it would not shoot for me using BLC, 4895, 4064, H380, 4320, H414 or 4831. No chrony back then so no fps info........sorry.

Don't know why...me too. Sierra 55gr. lat base. They are even pretty cheap.

That is surprising. That group is stable. My 1:12 doesn't like anything over 60 gr. But I haven't tried pushing harder. I've been using H380 and superformance. I have some Varget but no time to develop right now.

The 70 grain is nice. I'd be happy wearing out the barrel shooting tiny groups on paper with that one.

Try the Nosler 55 gr. BT with Varget. The load on the front of the powder bottle (36.5 gr) will yield 3600 fps (or darn close) ands will give you outstanding accuracy.
