Default 44 S&W SPECIAL LOADING DATA

I have some 277gr SWCHP Gas Check lead bullets but no loading data for that weight. Anyone have some good loads to share? Will be using them in a Model 696.

I wonder if a special could get that baseball sized chunk of lead to a velocity to make the HP worth it.

Just have to question whether the 696 is the proper vehicle for a such a heavy gas-checked hollowpoint?
My 696 (and me too) is happier with a lighter weight bullet...have lately been experimenting with full wadcutters from Penn and Western bullet companies and these are shaping up to be a really good combination.

Join loaddata.com. Well worth the money.

There is some 300 gr and 280 gr data out there. I would start with that.

You asked for good loads. In a light .44 special you can use the Penn Bullets full wadcuttter bullet loaded ahead of 5.0 grains of WST. Accurate, mild, and the full wadcutter design cuts nice big holes in paper and other targets.

Take any of the commercial cast plated bullets like Bayou, SNS 240 SWC and load ahead of 5.5 grains of 231 or 6.0 grains of unique.

I dont have any load data to the specific bullet you are using, however you could start with end data for the Lyman 429244 bullet because it could be heavier with a slight change in allow.

IMHO you will be happier with a 200 grain, or 240 loaded to mid range.

Good loading and shooting sir

I wouldn't waste those fancy bullets on a 3" barrelled gun, you'll never get enough velocity to make them expand, and the gas checks are a waste unless you're pushing them a lot faster.

If you just want to burn them up, have at it, there's 280-300 grain data available. But if it was me I'd use them as trade fodder or shoot them in a larger 44 Magnum. I prefer lighter bullets in my 44 Specials, to keep recoil in check and give me more velocity with short barrels.

You're supposed to cut those 277s in half.

I can't get the photos to paste on here, but they are "impressive" to say the least. ere is part of the casters statement above those photos.

..."They are cast at a brinell hardness rating of 11. In the photo the expanded bullet was fired from my super Blackhawk at around 900 FPS. The expansion is just over .800, almost double the caliber. Weight retention was almost 100%. Very good defensive load for .44 special, or light load for .44 Mag. If you want to push it in a .44 mag, I will cast them harder "...

300 data seems to make about 750 feet with H4227.
