Default What about these powders ?'s

Anyone have experience with these in 38-44 , 357 mag or 41 mag ?
300MP with cast bullets ? Seen some good data but with jacketed .
Herco looks like it might be good for mid level loads in the above . Coarse grained so it probably meters like 800X .
Accurate # 7 & 9 also seems like they might work .
Vihtavouri N350 , N105 or N110 . Also look like they might work .
800X will work but what a pain weighing every charge .
4227 is probably too slow for 38-44 , but with heavier bullets should work OK in the mags .
Blue Dot , SR 4756 & Win 296 have been unavailable around here for quite awhile . Just managed to get some 2400 & Unique this morning . I know 2400 will do all 3 just fine & Unique is probably too fast for my purpose .
Other than W296 & maybe 4227 does any of these require mag primers ?
Will be using following plain base bullets Lyman 358439 , 358429 & 410459 .

All depends on what vel level you are trying to reach. Mag primers are only req'd for the W296 IMO, the rest will run fine on std. If you want full power loads, AA#9 or 2400 are your best bet.

Looks like youve been doing some better research.
Personally, I prefer Unique for a midrange load over Herco.
the Accurate #7 and #9 are outstanding.

Have been using AA9 for upper mid range loads in .357, .41, .44 mag and .45 Colt. It meters great and is my accuracy powder in these calibers.
Advised to use magnum pistol primers @ less than full throttle loads IME.

I can't speak to the 41 mag but for the 38/44 and 357 mag:

Herco is good, basically a bit slower than Unique. I actually like more than unique for hotter loads. It seems to push more than it shoves when you compare it to Unique. It meters about the same as unique.

800x is a nice case filling powder that I have not worked much with in these rounds. Some day.

4227 is a tick slow for 38/44 but good for 357 magnum with a good strong crimp. Get a redding profile crimper and be happy. I tend to save my 4227 for 357 Maximum though. I still have enough 2400 to last a while longer in the Mag so no need to use alternatives yet.

I don't do mag primers in the 38/44 I do use mag primers for everything in the Mag. Mostly just because I have about 10,000 more of them and I am trying to get rid of them. In the futures I will switch over to normal primers for everything.

I laid in about 60 lbs of 4756 for 38/44 and 38 Super. It is my go to powder for those and I will shoot it until it is gone then work up new loads with 2400 and Herco. I think they are good matches for the future.

I posted in your previous thread about my experiences with 300MP and light lead .357 bullets. I think with heavier bullets it might work better as there is less concern of driving them too fast. I had no issues with leading driving Hunter Supply 125gr "hard cast" bullets to 1700-1800fps from a carbine. I would have preferred to run them slower, but I could only go so low with 300MP. The same loads shot fine from a revolver with no leading, though I mostly used them in the carbine.

I really like 800x in .38 +P loads, and use it in reduced power .44 Magnum as well. I use a single stage press and a Lyman Gen 6 to dispense each load, so the clumpiness of it is of no concern.

6.3gr of 800x under a 158gr SWC in .38 Special is a favorite of mine. Nice and punchy and it seems very accurate (to the extent I can tell). I'm not sure I'd shoot it in a .38-only though, it might be pretty close to the edge of +P.

12.5gr of 800x under a 200gr in .44 Magnum is also great, very enjoyable to shoot but not a powder-puff load. It does 1300 fps from an 8" N-frame.

These are both plated bullets, not lead, but I would imagine lead would perform similarly. I find plated bullets are just as cheap, are less hassle to seat, and less objectionable at an indoor range.

Default I like......

I like the Accurate powders and 2400 for where you are. Mag primers can be used in any load as long as the charge is adjusted down a few tenths of a grain. 2400 and Acc 7 don't require mag primers. I'm not a fan of 296 unless I want the hottest loads, which I usually don't.

I haven't used the Vitovuoris but I've never heard anything but great comments about them. The price slows me down a bit on the VV stuff.

2400 leaves a fair amount of yellow/gold powder all over the gun, but it cleans up easily.

I got some N105 when 4756 dried up to experiment with in mid to top loads in 44 special.
I have not had enough experience with it yet to recommend it one way or the other except to
say it seems to burn cleaner than 2400 pushing a 240 at ~900 fps.
22 grains in a 444 topped with Pufflon and a 240 JHP burns clean as well to give 44 magnum performance out of the 444.
It meters well. Quite small extruded granules.

I haven't actually seen any more N105 for sale since I got mine.

Well , that post certainly name checked every powder. of course you realize that since you actually have some Unique and 2400 , everyone else is jelous of you. Old School wisdom hold that between Unique and 2400 you can do everything except very light target loads.

And to an extent , that's true. The true part is that old school heavy Unique loads will more or less overlap with starting 2400 loads. The downside is that those Old Time Heavy Unique loads will have higher pressures than believed at the time, and in modern times the vels can be matched at lower pressures with several powders.

The contemporary gripe about 2400 is that it is "dirty". Not a big issue to me , YMMV .

There are more new / older but obscure powders that I can shake a stick at , much less put thru their paces. I posses , but haven't used yet Power Pistol, I have great hopes for " lower pressure Heavy Unique replacement loads". Decades ago used Blue Oot and at the time thought I liked it. With more recent revelations of wide lot to lot variations , I would hesitate to recomend.

Limited use of 800-X and AA#9 shox lots of potential.

And I really like 4227 .

Oh, I should add, there is some good info about 300MP in the Oct 2011 Handloader magazine. In .41 Mag there are some loads listed with a Mt Baldy and an Oregon Trail lead bullet. The .357 loads were all jacketed except for one gas-checked lead bullet. The author at one point states:
Quote:
In shooting several hundred rounds of plain-base, cast bullets in the 1,200 to 1450 fps velocity range in .41 and .44 magnums, there was very little leading.
