Default Bullet style for .32 S&W Long and H&R

I'm thinking about getting a couple of molds for .32 and I'm wondering what you've found to be the most accurate that is NOT a wadcutter? Weight between 95-115 grain. Just for punching paper and tin cans, no expansion needed or wanted. These will be shot in hand ejectors ranging from 1912 up to a 16-4. Thanks for your input.

RCBS 98 swc and the Lee 90 swc. It makes it easy to tell loads apart for th H&R.

I got in on a group buy on Castboolits for a MP Moulds SWC 110 gr solid/ 105 gr HP mould that shows a lot of promise. I also was fortunate to find one of the old Lyman 313445 (or was it -492?) SWC mould. I am pretty much sold on SWCs for the 32s as opposed to RN, and save my WCs for target use only. NOE offers what was a copy of the old Ideal 3118, but instead of the original 115 gr, it comes in at about 125 gr, so I save it for my 327 loadings... there's nothing wrong with the original Lyman or Ideal 115 grainers though as a heavy bullet for your 32 S&WL... I've used a many a one of them! It's a sort of RNFP.

Froggie

PS Hornady also sells a swaged SWC that runs around 95 gr or so IIRC. I've had good luck with them as well.

I cast the H&G # 67 for my 32 H&R, It drops at ~115 grains based on alloy, and shoots quite well.

Google a Handloader article on loads for the 32 Magnum. The article is quite extensive, and with Herco and AA #7 (if memory serves...), the round shows itself to be much more than was originally considered.

+1 ^ There are a ton of good articles with performance loads (both accuracy and power oriented) available on the InterWeb! You might go over to the Castboolit Forum and look for what you can find by the likes of Beagle, Glen Fryxell and MD Smith among others. Try this URL;

The .32 S&W Long: A Handgun Hunter's Perspective - By Glen E. Fryxell

If you can't find enough info to suit you, drop me a PM and I'll dig out URLs for a few more. I love the 32 S&W L so much I'm even thinking of having my Star Progressive modified to that caliber.

Regards,
Froggie

Ahhh, dear Froggie, I have read till I am blue in the face. I was just wondering what the folks here used. I have a 2" thick file on loading the .32's.

I like the RCBS design. It weighs about 103-grains in wheel weights. With its long nose it "seats long" for creative, Elmer Keith-style handloading - IF you have strong, modern guns and are so inclined. Accuracy has always been good in any gun I have used it in.

The current mold I have will not quite allow sizing to 0.314". 0.313" is max, which is a bit of a shame. The only criticism I have.

I like the .32 SWL fine just as it is for most shooting but I have seen data that will get this bullet up to 1000 FPS in modern S&W revolvers. I don't recall where I saw it. The powder was/is W231. I have shot a few of them. I've actually used this bullet more in my .32 SWLs than I have in my 16-4 .32 Magnum but it works well in either cartridge.

I'll see your 2" thick file and raise you about a gigabyte!

In answer to your specific question though, 2.3-2.5 gr of Bullseye under a 95 gr SWC seems to be a good baseline for me, but with my newfound wealth of HP 38, I'm hoping I can develop something good there as well.

People talk about how much loading data is out there for the 38s and the 44s, but like you, I'm discovering a vast universe of 32 loading data, and of course I never saw another 32 cal pistol bullet mould I didn't want!

Regards,
Froggie

Since you are looking for mould just buy a Lyman 311008 which is a ca. 112-115 gr. bullet which replicates the original .32-20 bullet. I have been using this in all my .32s except .32 S&W and .32 ACP for over 50 years. I have several moulds for .32, but this is my favorite.

You could also look at Accurate Molds, Accurate Molds: Custom Bullet Molds I have one of his moulds, a custom from my own design, and had it in my hands 7 days from the date of order! Look at what he has, and if you want something a bit different draw it up and E-mail it to him. Good prices, better than excellent service, and you can get Aluminum, Brass or Iron moulds as you prefer.

I really like this one and may buy a 2-3 cavity:

That 31-105A is something I have been looking at hard and long. It is right next to the 31-100X which I designed specifically as a short range bullet for carry guns. I'm probably going to get a pair of molds from Tom and it really is like being a kid in a candy store with the .32, there is just so much available, which is why I threw this post up. It is interesting and informative to see what others shoot in the same revolvers I use.

I use the Lee RN bullet intended for the .32 ACP. I smear lube in the groove and shoot it unsized using a light charge of 700-X in the Long case. Accuracy is amazing in my old and beat up Ruger Single Six.
