Magnum Pistol Primers...
Stopped by Cabela's the other day with the intent of grabbing a couple boxes of small pistol primers.
As I was putting them away this evening, I see that I picked up MAGNUM small pistol primers instead.
Question; how big of a difference is it between regular and mag primers? Better of selling, and getting right primers?
Loading 9mm with 115 berrys/xtreme, with whats left of my SR 4756, then Unique.
Thanks,

If you do a search here for magnum primers you will find a great deal of info. The short version is yes you can use them, but you may need to tailor your load to them.

Unless you are loading maximum pressure loads that were developed
with standard primers you can use your magnum primers with no load
adjustment or worries. You will never notice any difference.

A few months ago, I did the same thing only with large magnum pistol primers. I loaded them the same as large pistol primers and saw no difference, I don't think you will either, use them with confidence.

Last year, all I could get locally was magnum primers for SP. I used them in 9mm with a Berry's plated 124 grain FP bullet with 4.5 grains WST. No issues and functioned fine in Glocks 17and 19, Beretta 9FS Compact, and SIG P228.

Over the years I have tested cci550 and WSPM against standard
primers per accuracy and fps......
From a little J frame snub to K and L frame 6", .357 magnums
to see if there might be a "Magic Load".
Nothing to write home about............ but I did have a few loads
with a lower fps than a Std. primer, which I thought was weird.
Never loaded a 9mm with them but now that I have some HS-6
I will try one load, just to see what turns up in the accuracy and fps departments. (WSPM)
However that will be after all my "Important testing" is all done.

Magnum primers will burn slightly longer and slightly hotter than standard primers but they will not create a nuclear explosion so not to worry.
In the 9mm with a magnum primer you might need to reduce the powder charge by .1gr or at the most .2gr to generate the same velocities as with standard primers. Depending on the powder it might not even matter. Remember, the current Winchester LP primers are rated for both standard and magnum loads but nowhere do you see a recommendation to reduce the powder charges when using them.
Load them up and see who you like the results.

There is a trend.......
There is a trend to use only magnum primers in everything, with proper adjustment, of course.

I've been down that path myself, rwsmith. Not because I wanted to, but because of the lack of standard small pistol primers. During the worst of the present shortages, all I had and could find were Fed SPM primers and for a while I loaded everything with them. I didn't find I had to do any powder adjusting to my loads either. But now I'm back to using Magnum primers only in magnum type cartridges.

From what I have read it's more important using heavy loads when specs call for magnum primers. I did purchase a brick of Win SP primers that said 'for standard or magnum loads'. D'Oh..

Winchester doesn't make SP primers rated for both standard and magnum loads, that's their LPP. If you buy a Win LPP you have no choice, that's all they make.
Magnum primers are used for hard to ignite slow ball powders, not because of heavy bullets.

Thanks for all the feedback. When I get to these, (in another 5000 rounds), I'll crank back a tenth or two, load a half dozen and see how they go.
